A great place for a starting point is your closet - look at the clothes you own and determine if you are more casual or more formal. Then see what colors seem to repeat themselves the most in your wardrobe. Pick three that complement each other (like sage green, cinnamon and eggplant).

Once you've decided on your colors, you can start browsing the stores for bedding and accessories in those shades. When you've found the right linens, it will be time to select a coodinating paint for the walls (don't feel you have to do all the walls the same color, and don't forget to think about ceiling treatments and lighting).

With a big room, you might be able to include more than just a bed and a couple of nightstands...how about a chaise lounge and side table with a lamp? Some bookcases or display shelves/curio cabinet?

A flat panel TV is a must.

Pick up a few decorating magazines, try to get a variety. Every time you see something in one you like, cut it out. Look at everything you've cut out and see if you can see similarities or trends. Arrange a few of the cut-outs together and find something similar that will work for you. Maybe also try to find what you like about each one (love the color, feels cozy, will be great for friends coming over, like how its so organized)
