Carbs are great for getting a burst of energy before you work out. It's a horrible idea for a diet though, unless you are a professional athlete that works out constantly, and even then it's a bad idea. The best diet is one based on carbs, protein, fruits and veges, and lots of cheese (ok, I am from WI and we like cheese a lot) and a sweet snack for fun. As long as you have a balanced diet and work out somewhat (going for walks or even going to the gym a couple times a week) then you are fine. There are a million books on dieting, but cutting out a lot of bad snacks: sweets, soda, and alcohol (like I said I am from WI, so I like beer and I treat myself to some beers once and a while) you are doing well. You must be looking to lose weight so I will tell you that no pill or fad diet will make you lose weight and be healthy for you. You just need to eat most of the foods you like, and cut out the sodas and candies as much as you can. You can still slpurge once and a while, but don't fall into these fad diets or pills. They just want to make money off you. Don't starve yourself and don't deprive yourself of foods you like, that makes you feel like being tortured. Just be active and have fun. Good luck.

Carbohydrates are easily broken down into sugars by the body, and sugar is a good fuel if a person wants to do something that requires a great deal of endurance. Without enough carbohydrates in the body, the body will start digesting other things, which is a less efficient and sometimes painful process. For example, distance runners get to a point when they "hit the wall," meaning their bodies have run out of easy fuel and are now dipping into their fat reserves to keep them moving.

Carb loading is making sure to eat tons of carbohydrates when you think you will need the energy. For example, the night before the Boston Marathon, there is always a huge pasta dinner for all of the registered runners, as an opportunity for them to do some carb loading before the big race.

That is when people want an energy FEAST! Football players have a "party" the day before a big game and load up on Carbs to have energy for the next day. I think it works.

People eat carbohydrate rich meals in the belief that it will increase their stamina in endurance races like marathons or triathlons.
