You should sign up for college first and start, go ROTC Reserve Officers Training Corp) thus ensuring your get your education first, its paid for, you major in journalism, and tell the recruiter this is the field you want to go into in it. You will have to serve but you will be in this country for at least 4 years. ROTC would ensure that when you do graduate you will go into the army as a second lieutenant, already an officer, with better opportunities and pay so you can pursue what you want to do.

Do both, keeping in mind that if you join the Army, it's possible the Army can help you pay for your college education. If you're looking for part-time with the Army, then check out the National Guard or the Army Reserve. College will provide an opportunity to expand your learning, while the Army helps you develop leadership skills & practical hands-on approach in the field. Then when you graduate, you have the Army on your Resume & a degree, you will be ahead of the competition in whatever job you apply for.

My knee-jerk reaction aside...

it depends on what you want to experience. The climate of the military right now is war. If you join, you're probably going to tour overseas. Not only that, military is hard work. Really hard work. Boot camp is just the first step. It's mentally hard work, too. So, you'll get to experience the best and worst of the human condition while at the same time, serve your country by risking your life to follow the orders of our commander-in-chief.

The climate of college is academic - no joke intended here. The college world is completely different from the real world. It encourages thought processes that may or may not be acceptable in the "real world" - however - I would highly recommend it. You learn exactly what you want to learn.

Both can offer you rich experience. Both take time and dedication. Both are respectable positions in my view. It honestly depends on what you want. I say straight to college, but I know without those people on the front lines risking their lives, we wouldn't have the freedom to choose such a thing.

Good luck!

Why not go into the military and BE a Journalist?

The biggest problem right now is, nobody trusts traditional journalism- newspapers have dropped in circulation, and the net has taken over, and most people are getting information from blogs.

Journalists have complained about "journalist integrity" but the general population knows their lying- when Clintion was in the white house, the media was slanted left. Bush is in the white house, its slanted right. Nobody trusts them- hence the blogs

If you have the means, go to school first. If, when you're done, you still feel the need to serve your country, and good for you if you do, join the Army then. Not only will your education help you get better positions, you can still repay your student loans through the military. Not to mention that MAYBE by then, things will have slowed down overseas. (Hey, I can only hope.)

Join the army, but don't go straight, that should give someone else something to write about.

You can do both. If you go into the officor corp (I think thats what it's called over there) you can study for a degree (not sure about jounalism though) Might be worth having a chat with your local recruitment officer. best of luck

If you can afford college...go now. If you can't or feel that going now is not a good idea, then the military can be a great expierience...but Iraq is no joke so think about it
