Convince yourself that you deserve better and I'm sure you do. Look at it as his loss, not yours and move on. You can love someone dearly and still be smart enough to know that you can't actually be with them because it's simply not good for you. I have an ex from 15 years ago that I'll always adore, but we can't be in the same room without trying to claw each other's eyeballs out. We've broke up 12 years ago and we have remained friends..on the phone. lol

Remember the talks in kindergarten about abuse? Say no, Get away, Tell someone! You're an adult now. Make your own choices and learn from your mistakes. If you are not happy in a relationship you have the right to leave. It is good to recognize the signs though to save yourself from further abuse
