Those of us who believe that the Bible is true have accepted such a belief. At some point, everyone has to choose what he or she accepts as reality or truth. Those who believe that the Bible is truth or part of the larger truth of our world will speak from exactly that perspective. Those who don't believe it, will speak from their own perspective.
Think of it this way - why do people use any answer as if it's 100% true? Because they believe it is. For example, if I asked you what nation has kangaroos jumping around it, in the wild, you might answer "Australia", even if you've never been there or seen a Kangaroo. Why then do you answer as though it's 100% true? Because you really believe it is. The reality is that maybe your whole life is nothing more than an elaborate act put on by thousands of people and you're the only one who doesn't know it, and we're all fooling you. For all you know, we made up "Australia" and "kangaroos" and taught that myth to you because it's part of our cruel act. But if you don't believe that's possible, it's only because you choose to believe that Australia is real and the stories, pictures, etc. that you've seen and read about Australia are truthful.
Hope that helps you understand why anyone, including those who believe in the Bible, believes what he or she believes!

The Bible isn't a "fiction novel." The Bible is actually a collection of many writings, letters, poetry, stories, history, all spanning over 1000 years. I believe the Bible contains truth. I don't look to the Bible to understand creation, i look to the Bible to understand what my ancestors in the faith believed about God and creation. I look to the Bible as a witness and testimony of the faith of many people. We're not meant to look to the Bible as a "how-to" from God to us.
Some people look to faith, God, the Bible, Fox News, whatever, for easy, black and white answers. But, it's much easier to turn on some tv preacher or sit in a mega church and hear faith simplified, than to think for oneself, and recognize the complexities of faith and life. But, I keep hoping change is around the corner.

I think it is fantastic that the first three responses you got are practically the same as those you are complaining about.
Religious zealots will only use the bible because that's all they have. There is no evidence outside the bible for the content inside the bible. A few things turn out to be archaeologically true, a lot of time time because it was being written as it was happening. But if you throw a stick enough times, eventually it's going to hit something.

Christians use the Bible as their authority because it is God inspired. Peoples' opinions in response to questions mean nothing. An opinion only belongs to the person who wants to state it, but the God of the Bible knows everything and is in all places at all times. His book, the Bible is FACT, NOT AN OPINION.

Because they believe that it is 100% true, no questions asked. It is called faith.
It is not seen as fiction in any way, shape, or form.
Of course there are different types of literature represented in the Bible, (66 books all in one literary form would be a bit odd, wouldn't it) so that does lead to some confusion as not everyone understands this. And this means both sides of the discussion don't always understand this. ; )
I would be in the 100% camp, but I understand that for you it is rather like reading someone else's mail and doesn't make much sense at all. (Reading poetry as prose or allegory as history often has that effect.)
I'll try to look for more of your questions on the topic. Thanks.

Its all a matter of opinion. I think the Bible is not a fiction novel, but the word of God. So to me, if its in the Bible, its true.

Living by the Word, Speaking the Word, Planting Truth seed to the Glory of God in Christ Jesus!
There was a time when I used to believe that the Bible was a book written by man to keep the slaves in line in America (silly huh)? I was so ignorant to Truth!
I didn't read the Bible at that time, I just flipped through it, the word "slave" was noticed....
Decades later God showed me differently, the life I used to live, I no longer live. My life now is lived by the Word of God!
I believe, I know the Bible is the inspired Word of God written by man! God choose the men who wrote the books of the Bible!
My faith in God enables me to plant seed from His written word.
Giving a quotation from the Bible to answer a question is assurance that I am not answering from the imagination of my mind; (Satan attacks the mind, the thought process, ones way of thinking). God's Word has an answer to any question that may arise in our flesh existence.
God's Word is Truth, the Way to Life!

I appreciate your attempt at being more open-minded to the basic fact that there no ancient text from the Bible to the Sutras can be proven infallible. However, I feel it's relevant to point out that you come across as narrow minded as those you seek to oppose. It has nothing to do with the Bible specifically and everything to do with 2000 yrs of tradition around which millions of people have built their lives. Thus, for those millions it has indeed created a social structure which is as completely true within the bounds of their subjective experience as it is false within yours. If you wish for religious individuals to listen to your voice you have to be willing to hear theirs as well otherwise you're merely shifting power to the complete opposite direction out of selfishness rather than striving for a balanced dialogue.

Why reinvent the wheel? Besides, archaeologists and anthropologists have found many ways of confirming what is claimed in the Bible. Unless you do the actual research, you cannot expect others to join you in your fantasy that the Bible is fiction. Don't be so lazy. The Internet makes research a snap. Try it.

Uh person who wrote this question: I'm 99.9% with you! the other 00.01% is unsure about everything. To me, the "bible" is just a book of fairy tales. And i've explained this too many times so if you want to see my opinions, just look through my answers and see if there are any questions that are similar to this one. Point is, the bible is a hyped up storybook with fake-leather covering just to make it look authentic. in my humble opinion. It's not HIS word. Ir may have been, once upon a time, but now people have twisted it to be what it is today. AND so many people misinterpret their own lies that THEY wrote in there it's not even funny! i mean, good lord!
