Try this:
1/2 cupall purpose Flour
1-1/2 Cups Cornstarch
2 cups water
2 tsps Cream of TArtar
1 cup salt
1 tbsp Oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture gathers on the stirring spoon and forms a dough ( about 6 mins). Dump onto wax paper until cool enough to handle and knead to form a pliable mass. Store in a covered container or plastic bag. Food coloring may be added to make different colors. Makes about 1 kg.

You will need:

2 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
2 Tb. of oil
1/4 cup of vinegar
13/4 cup of water
Food coloring

Cook in a non-stick fry pan until thick like mashed potatoes.
Knead until smooth and store in airtight container.
OR
Homemade Play Dough (superior):

Mix together:

1 cup of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of salt
2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon of cooking oil

Mix until you have a smooth paste. Cook on medium-low heat in a saucepan, stirring, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the saucepan and forms a ball. Take the saucepan off the burner and let cool for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the dough is cool enough to handle. Remove the dough from the pan and knead it for a few minutes. Voila! You have a superior homemade play dough. Store the dough in a plastic sealed container or a plastic ziploc bag.
