you dont really need to exfoliate, people say it gives you nice healthy skin, really it takes off a layer of dead skin thats going to come off with normal washing or fall off a little later. People just feel good about exfoliating, its kind of addictive. Don't do it more than every couple of days because depending on the exfoliator it can be really rough. I limit my self to times when my face feels super gritty. If it starts iritating your skin, stop all together.

Exfloiating the skin gets rid of all the dead skin cells. Once you have exfoliated you are left with a fresh canvas to work with, and the new skin will benefit from your skin care routine a lot more than without exfoliating. If you can't exfoliate everyday then 2-3 times a week will help you keep your skin looking healthy.

Actually, there are two schools of thought...
The first school promotes exfoliation becuase when you scrub off the skin's top layer, you will then be able to reveal the radiance within.. but you are not encouraged to exfoiliate more than 2 times a week.
The second school of thought though says tat you should not exfoiliate your skin because if you do, you are just removing the very thing that is protecting your skin.

Google is your friend =D (probably shouldn't say that on the Yahoo boards lol)
http://www.kramerindustriesonline.com/applications/microdermabrasion.htm
Apparently, aluminum oxide is used as the 'abrasive' part to exfoliating. Exfoliating is useful because it gets rid of the dead skin cells, extra gunk on your face so that your pores don't get clogged and you don't end up with huge, swelling, nasty pimples =D
Don't exfoliate your skin too often, or too harshly, because your skin will become red and flaky.

Hope that helps!

Exfoliating helps to rid the skin pores of impurities like dirt and dead skin cells... But the BEST way to keep your skin pure, is to drink plenty water and stay away from greasy foods and dark sodas!!!!!! Not sure of a suggested frequency of exfoliating but I make sure I do it once a week, and just make sure I keep my face clean everyday.

Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells and dirt/impurities. I exfoliate my skin every day. A lot of people say not to do that, but if I don't my complexion looks very dull.
2-3 times a week should be good though.

To get rid of dead skin cells. Keeps skin younger looking. It depends on your skin as to how often. If it is sensitve, not as often. If not, a couple of times a week.
