yes because after awhile it will decay and you will have to have a root canal, and sometimes infection has a straight entry to your body that way.... so becareful and see a dentist as soon as possible.

I wouldn't say it is necessary to see a dentist, but it would be advisable. I have had teeth do the same before and did not immediately see a dentist. After some time, the tooth actually broke enough so that food particles woul get stuck inside where a brushing could not get to it. This in turn began to create other health problems along with short term, yet extreme pain.

There are a couple of things that can cause a tooth to break.
And, it depends on what you mean by 'break.'
If you can see faint 'cracking' lines in your teeth, it could be that you are grinding/clenching your teeth. In this case, you would want to see a dentist to have a nightguard made for your teeth.
Also, a tooth can have a pretty significant amount of decay without any pain. In fact, your root may be dead if your tooth has broken off and you're not feeling any pain. In this case, I would also advise you to see your dentist.
Only your dentist can tell you exactly what the problem is.

I know that I'm just going to be reinforcing the previous answers but you should absolutely go see a dentist. Even if there's no pain, the chipping tooth could be signs of rotting (even if the enamel is white), a cavity, a calcium deficiency, or possibly even nerve damage.
A general rule of thumb for health problems is: if you think you MIGHT need to see a doctor, GO SEE ONE AS SOON AS YOU CAN.
