We keep our apartment spotless...but our neighbors are freakin' slobs! And the ants come through the walls to our place. I'm sick of killing them...day after day. They get into everything: the sink, the trash, the cats' food! We have two cats and so obviously we can't be spraying Black Flag or some other highly toxic substance around everywhere (Cat walks through poison, cat then licks paws, cat gets sick, etc...you see the dilema). Besides, those pesticides smell like crap and stink up the whole place.
So does anyone know any pet-safe ant poisons?

Boric acid powder is sold as a bug powder or roach powder. It is nontoxic to animals with bones; it kills animals with exoskeletons by damaging the exoskeleton so the bug dries up.
My favorite ant treatment is boric acid mixed with pancake syrup. Ants love it. I put a little on a piece of paper and the ants swarm it. They take it back to the colony and kill the other ants too. Usually I take some and drizzle it around on the plants and dead leaves around the outside of the house. If I want to make extra sure the pets don't mess with it, I crumple a paper towel, dampen it with the mixture, and put it inside a jar; close the lid, and poke some holes in the lid. Ants can go through the holes for it.

I live in an RV with 3 cats. I have found that Spectracide Bug Stop works well. We had a fire ant invasion about a month ago. IT IS harmful to pets while it is wet so make sure that if you use it the pets do not come into contact with it until it is dry. BTW one of my cats is very chemical intolerant and it has not bothered him.

I have found the Grant's ant stakes work very well in my house and out in my garden. The ants disappear after a few days and the holes are so tiny that no cat could possibly get into the stuff.
