Matthew chapter 1 describes the genealogy from Abraham and King David to connect it with Jesus. Verse 1:16 says, "And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ." This suggests that Joseph was the father of Jesus linking Jesus to Kind David, thus fulfilling the prophesy in Isaiah that the messiah would be a descendant of King David.

But according to Matthew 1:18 - 25 Mary was "found with child of the Holy Spirit." So Joseph really wasn't the father of Jesus, thus Jesus was not a descendent of King David, which means he wasn't the messiah.

What am I missing?

It depends entirely on how you want to look at it.

If you believe that Mary was a virgin until the day she died, as the Catholic church teaches, you can say that Joseph was Jesus' father in the same way that he was Mary's husband - without conjugal relations.

You can also look at it from the point of view of an adoptive parent. If an infant is adopted then the adoptive parents are the child's true parents. The father is the man who gave the child a name and raised him. The adoptive child has the same rights of inheritance as a natural born child. This would also make Jesus Joseph's son.

Also, I would think that since David was a direct descendant of Adam and Eve and they were created by God, wouldn't that still make Jesus a descendant of David if he was conceived by God's Holy Spirit?

Jesus was the son of the woman Mary and God, by the Holy Spirit, as His father. Joseph was not Jesus' biological father. He did bear the lineage of Joseph for legal geneaologies in the written scriptures. Both Joseph and Mary were of the tribe of Judah, both descendants of the David through Nathan, the son of David and Bathsheba.

Jesus was absolutely the Messiah and could ONLY be the Messiah. He had every right to sit on the thone of David, His ancestor through MARY His mother. He was of the tribe of Judah, the only royal tribe permitted to be part of the King's lineage.

Matthew records the legal lineage of Jesus through Joseph and Luke records in from MARY.

Jesus Is the Son Of God; therefore He Is the Son Of the Holy Spirit, Who Is God.

St. Joseph only had 2(albeit very important)purposes in the Holy Family.

1)To Shield the True Identify Of the Father Of Jesus.

2) To give Our Lord Jesus His David heritage.

Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

The comma calls attention to Mary, not Joseph. Mary is the parent to whom Jesus was born, not Joseph. Joseph accepted him and adopted Jesus according to custom, thus gaining the right to call Jesus son. But the father of Jesus remains the Holy Spirit of God.

Joseph is referenced as the father of Jesus because in some OT prophesies, it was said that the Messiah would come from the line of David.
Both Mary and Joseph we decendants of David.

In my opinion....Joseph is Jesus' father in the sense that his sperm and his presence in the family home as a parent makes him a father. The Holy Spirit is the energy that comes from our Higher Power that allows everyone of us to connect with the "spirit in the sky".

Jesus was a child of God. Joseph was his physical father.

Though he was not of the seamen of Joseph Joseph was the father that God gave to him. He wasn't the material Messiah. He was the holy messenger. Not the Material King that many where looking for. Real Messiah means the messenger of God Go to www.essene.org for the truth on Christ (lost teachings)

No man can be considered as Father of Christ, except the One True God.
God creates the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit manifests Himself in the person of Jesus.

Joseph was not Jesus' father because Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. I guess you could say Joseph was more like Jesus' stepfather.
