I want to try to get invited to stay and work with some of my foreign (and business-owning) cousins for a while, but I don't know how to ask them without sounding like a moocher or a jerk. I'm certainly willing to pay rent, etc., but I don't know how to even bring up the topic! Help!!

It depends on your motive. If you're looking to expand your knowledge of their land and businesses - just tell them so, and let them know right up front that you are willing to pull your own weight. I would go as far as letting them know you're not only willing to pay rent, but help pay for food as well.

If you're just looking to go on holiday - well, you can let them know that too. So long as you're willing to pay for your self, it shouldn't matter.

If you're expecting them to pay for you... don't ask.

If you're thinking you're going to go stay and get a job with them, make sure you know their business in and out before you mention anything. Let them know that you understand what is asked of you. If you just want to stay without working for them, let them know that you have money to pay for rent and food while you search for a job... and be sure that you do.

Good luck!

I think it's a little tacky to ask someone to live with them. I wouldn't like it if a distant cousin asked me. Then you have to be put in the akward position of saying no. Think this one over before asking. They will probably talk about you.

Present it as directly as you have here. If your relationship with them is sound and as you say you're willing to pay room and board, why not just ask?
