Fluoride is a natural element (compound) found in water in some parts of the country. It was found that these places where fluoride was natural had less cavities in the children's teeth than typical elsewhere. It was determined that fluoride could be added to water for the purpose of fighting cavities in the general population. It has proven to be an effective agent in water, supplemented sometimes by treatment by dentists and now toothpastes. It serves to protect teeth from decay by putting up a protective barrier without harming teeth.
