i saw one the other night foraging in someone's garbage. i mistook it for a dog and got close. when it noticed me, it bared it's teeth but stood in a submissive pose. what does that mean?
i could tell it was a coyote because of the bushy tail and long pointed snout plus it's coloring. i just backed away and it didn't pursue me. there have been reports of coyotes attacking people in a nearby state park that were killed by sharpshooters.
my question is if i happen to run into one again, what should i do??

my area is not new. it's been around since the 1800's and coyotes are fairly new to this area. from what i've read about coyotes, they actually follow people because we unintentionally provide them with easy meals. garbage, pet food, bird seed, small pets, plants, and etc. they are opportunists that will eat whatever they can find. so you can't really say we are intruding on them.

Coyotees are timid and easily scared off.. they dont like "tall" things so raising your hands may help - YELLING usually is all that is needed to frighten one off.. making threatening movements towards one will scare them
or get a donkey - donkeys are brilliant guard animals.. they will kill a coyotee
NEVER run - if you run you turn your self into prey

Coyotes are very dangerous. They usually do not allow you to get that close to them. The problem is if the coyote has rabies or is sick in any other way they will be very aggresive and come after you.
I am not sure what you should do if confronted again. I think I would walk BACKWARDS away from it so I could keep an eye on it. I would keep backing off very slowly and quietly.
Coyotes are becoming a problem all over the country for some reason.

Call local animal control and tell them. They can tell you how to be safe and maybe they will set some sort of trap. The coyotes are getting bolder as they grow hungrier. People leave trash, garbage etc out where they can smell it. They don't know any better. I would not confront it and definitely, if you have small children or pets, keep them in. Don't let them out without you being there. They can kill either one.
Good luck.

Coyotes are by nature very wary of people ,are very mistrustful and scared of them. The reason one sees coyotes in neighborhoods now is that people are moving into thir lands-where they live and the coyote as many other animals have no morae wild places left and they get hungry and are looking for food. They will kill and eat small dogs and cats but its hard for me to beliee they attack people unless they'r being chased and backed into a corner. If you see one back off slowly-do not turn and run--not even with a dog for it brings out the chase prey instinct for their prey runs. and get out of its way for it is a wild animal and even tame dogs, cats if scared, threatened will defend itself and bite

No one is releasing coyotes into urban areas. They are predators of opportunity and are attracted to areas that supply them with a food source. Trash, pet food and small pets. The more habituated they become to humans the more fearless they can become and will be a threat to small children.

Iv'e lived in the mountains for 16 years in california, coyotes lived with me. They are not dangerous, they stay away from the house and eat wild animals, they ate my chickens and ducks though =( we put wire around the top of the fence, but they won't attack humans. I am VERY SURE of that. My parents stayed out there at night to protect them with a light and they didn't come.

it means that it feels threatened by you. whatever u do when in contact with a coyote, do not look it straight in the eye. this is seen as a threat for power and it will 1. either leave u if way too intimidated, or 2. it'll attack you.
try to avoid them, and they eat dogs, so keep ur pets inside!!

Coyotes can carry diseases and should be avoided at all costs.
Contact your local animal control for specific suggestions.

Coyotes have been known to eat small pets and children.
They are cowardly however so just scare them off and they will leave you alone.

Yes they can be dangerous to humans & other animals.
If you saw one in your trash, chance is he'll be back, b/c he's hungry. You need to call your County Agents. They'll come out & set traps.
