They were the Tribes of Israel, and there were 12. Abraham had only two sons, Ishmael & Isaac. Isaac bore Jacob & Esau. Jacob later took the name Israel and had 12 sons, each of whom founded a tribe named for him. Eventually the largest land area and most successful of the tribes was named for Judah, and from that name comes the eventual name for the entire people known as Jews.

Abraham had a son named Isaac, Isaac had a son named Jacob. Jacob's name was changed to Israel and the Twelve tribes of Israel were the decendents of his sons.

Abraham never had tribes dear. I think it was Jacob who had tribes and He had twelve tribes.
