Seeing a psychologist. About 6 weeks of cognitive behavoral therapy is just as effective as medication without the awful side effects and it starts working right away and you won't have to switch meds every few months like you might with medication. Also try change your diet. Eat healthy, get enough sleep and exercise.

Don't bother with St. John's wort. It doesn't help clinical depression and is a medication with it's own set of side effects. It can cause complications when taking other medication for example it reduces the effectiveness of birth control pills. It's not a good thing and you may as well take prozac if you are really depressed not just a bit down.

I know what that is like. I suffer from depression. And at times there are just days where you dont want to do anything. but the best treatment for depression is medication and a good therapy not only therapy but MAINLY the willing to want to get better and getting help.

You see depression or anxiety, is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. And the medication is help balance the chemicals which are your hormones. Which will help the person feel much better. Depression is also hereditary, so you may want to take care of that. Depression also has effects of making the body ache, and feeling ill. This needs to be controled.

Hope this helps,

I have suffered from depression for 10 years, and only recently (last 6 months) went to see a professional and started medication. Why do you not want to take depression meds? From experience, they really, really help, even if the depression is minor. But, to fight depression without meds, here are some suggestions.
1. Hug someone at least once a day. The touch of another person can do amazing things to help you.
2. Please talk to someone you really trust, and tell them how you are feeling, don't be shy or embarrased about it. I am a teacher and you would not believe how many students have confided in me that they suffer from varying levels of depression.
3. Find something you like to do/ are good at, and do it at least once a week. I know this can be hard to do when you are depressed and down, but there has got to be at least one thing you LOVE to do. For me its singing with my church choir.
4. Don't try to hide who you are by pretending to be happy and cheerful 100% of the time. This really does only make things worse.
5. At first your friends may have some trouble processing how to handle you. Talk to them individually and explain whats happening, because again from experience, when no one else seems to understand you, a good friend will, and you will need these people to support you to beat this.

You can do it, I have faith in you. Good Luck!!

First you need to talk to your doctor. Not all depression is something you can control...sometimes it can be the result of a chemical imbalance in your system that you may need medication to correct.

Exercise, good nutrition, a good schedule schedule of rest (at least 8 hours) and sunlight will also help. Stay away from caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. Meditation, writing about how you feel, there are many avenues for you to explore and some will take more time than others to effect change. Best wishes....

Exercise works better than anything. Unfortunately, depression can immobilize you enough so that you can hardly move, much less exercise. Try forcing yourself to do more each day. Also, consider taking medication and then study and read about things you can do life-style wise to help and adopt the advice as your are able to. Once you are taking positive steps to keep depression at bay, start weaning yourself from the meds. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Depends, it is situational ? Like the death of a loved one or you recently became disabled or work in your chosen career is disappearing ? Meds won't change reality, although they could give you a temporary lift, kind of like jump starting a car when the battery is low. We have to learn to accept life's changes.
But if you are depressed & don NOT know why, then maybe you have a dietary deficiency or exposure to toxic chemicals or something else.
Resolution of depression is a wideeeee topic and you didn't really provide enough info for a good response.

I can totally relate to the depression. The only time that I am not is when I am playin with my pets. Meditation? probly not. I am sure that may be a short term ( minutes? ) help, but once you are back to the reality of your situation you are back to square one. SO you have to find something that makes YOU happy. Whether it is a pet , reading ( not me ) or helping someone that needs it more than you! For sure talk about it to a friend or family if you feel comfortable with it. If not go to a doctor. ( family one first ).

Do some research on the Web re: depression. Is this a new feeling? Or has it been going on for a while? Do you have suicidal thoughts or want to harm yourself or others? is it affecting daily functioning and health habits? If it's a brief case of the blues, try to treat yourself to some of your favorite guilty pleasures. Talk to someone you trust! And when in doubt, seek professional help!

It depends on the kind of depression. Do you have situational depression, such as your hubby left you, loss of a loved one or job, big change in income or job? You may be able to overcome that with behavior modification as simple as exercise, more sunlight, doing things for yourself or others. Clinical depression, the long lasting type is best helped by meds or therapy.

Find something to do.
Make some friends.
Practice a hobby or something.
Fall in love ;-)
Listen to cheerful music!
Talk to someone.
Whatever you do, don't try medications!! been there, done that, got over dosed & felt crappier than ever :-(
Good luck! & always remember, you're not gonna let this damn depression get you!! you're much smarter & stronger than those who let depression get teh best of them.
