It sounds like what might be known as a wolfworm. These are pretty common parasites in the south. It's the maggot to the bot fly. Gross...but this is what a wolfworm is. They mostly show up in skunks, squirrels, coons and the likes, but dogs are commonly afflicted, too...and occasionally cats. Treat the wound with some triple antibiotic for a few days to keep the chance of infection down. See a vet if it starts to look infected in the least. Redness, swelling and oozieness are signs to watch for.

Did it look like a large grub or maggot? If so,it was probably a cutarebra, which is a type of fly larvae. The flies lay their eggs near areas where animals frequent, then when the animal walks by,it's fur brushes against the eggs, which attach to it's coat. The egg hatches and the larva burrows into the skin of the host animal. After a period of time ,the larvae burrows out, drops to the ground and continues it's development into a fly.You are lucky that the larva wasn't ruptured when your son pulled it out,as this can cause a serious reaction in the animal. If you notice one of these sores again contact a vet to remove it .You should clean the dog's wound with peroxide and apply some Neosporin to the wound for a few days.

Have your dog checked by a VET for there are parasitic worms, insects that burrow into animals AND Humans and cause quite sometime serious damage esp in humans. Since there may be more and if not your dog may have to take internal medication to make sure no part of this worm??was left inside esp since worms can have tails pulled off but grow another and to protect you and the family esp your son from having this parasite passed on to any of you.Sometimes the parasite is quite small but grows large feeding on the host animal or host human. I would do this ASAP.In the Meantime put some Hydrogen Peroxide on the wound to disinfect and handle the dog only when necssary before he is checked by the vet

If it was a wound, it must be infected. That does not sound good. I would save the worm or whatever it is to show the Vet. That will tell him what it is and why it is on the dog.
He is going to ask you how the dog got injured and how long ago. That is what I would call an emergency. I would have called my Vet immediately. I don't know where you live, but where I am it is now 11:20 p.m. and I would STILL call my Vet. I wouldn't be able to sleep not knowing what the hell my dog has wrong with him.
Someone above me said to apply neosporin on the wound. My Vet told me to NEVER use that on my dog. It can make it worse than it already is. NEVER give your dog anything that your Vet has not approved.

Looks like you have a parasite and need to take it to the vet. It may be living off the infection from the scab.

This sounds like what one would see sometimes in cats ,squirrels, etc, and it is called a "WOLF",if the worm was completely removed, then clean the area very good with peroxide, then apply an antibiotic, such as neosporin.Keep the area clean until it heals.
