Can anyone explain the obsession with fog lights? I'm not talking about the small running lights on vehicles...I mean the huge fog lights that so many drivers seem to think they need regardless of the weather. At night, they blind oncoming traffic. During the day, they're just pretentious. Am I just out of touch, or do they annoy other people too?

Fog lights are positioned to provide low profile illumination that cuts through the fog rather than being reflected by it. Next time you are in fog, turn on your high beams - you will actually see more poorly. The high profile lighting will be reflected by the fog. Fog lights get around this and give you the illumination you need to drive safely.

Once during a foggy mountain breakdown we had to use the foglights to find our way.
