The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) church stopped practicing polygamy in 1890. (check the official declaration in your D&C) I believe many people still associate polygamy with the church because some of them did at one point practise it. People may hear that and not realize that now people are excommunicated from the church if they practise polygamy. It sticks because it makes the religion look bad and alot of people are out to get other people. Something that is as socially unacceptable in the USA as polygamy is a good target.

I am not a Mormon or a part of any LDS church, but your comments amaze me.
If you paid attention, you would know that the Mormon Church hasn't been in existance for 200 years and that declaration 1 at the back of the D&C gives the date of it being withdrawn (if the church began in 1830, .you will find that the announcement took place in 1890. It is an announcement that it seems prudent that we stop. It is not a command, so it continued for some time after that. It also talks about the fact that it will stop for _a time_. That means that it is going to get going again.) This is one point where you haven't been told what is in your scriptures!
Nobody is saying that the Mormon church still practices polygamy. What people do say is that some in the LDS church family do. They recognize a number of cardinal LDS doctrines just like the Mormons:
- Joseph Smith as a prophet
-The Book of Mormon as scripture
-The nature of salvation
-The temple rituals
With these things in common, they are a part of the LDS church family although they don't recognize presidents after Woodruff as prophets of God.

The media associates polygamy in the US with being Mormon period. A few years back, I just ran an Internet search to see how Mormons & Polygamy were linked. I found this site: http://mysite.verizon.net/pulsar/Library_Ref/Anthropology/Culture/Polygamy/3Coins_polygamy/coins.html I was amazed to learn that Evangelical Fundamentalist, Jews and even some Baptist were practicing polygamy all over the US . . . apparently, not just a Utah or Mormon problem. They all said they were in Bible based religions. You will never really hear the media share there are non Mormons practicing polygamy.
The site is now a pay site. I have absolutely no desire to see what religions are linked with the current couple seeking female or female seeking couple postings. Someone else can join and report back.
Don't you just hate how if you post a misspelled word, you can't correct the question? 2006-1830 may not be 200 years, but it is close when you average things off.
Addendum: the site seems to have moved to 2wives.com
My understanding is when polygamy was outlawed, the men in the Church did not "dump" their wives. More wives were not to be added.

I don't get it either, Jaxon. And Pinetree had only marginal facts in his comments. Mormon men can ONLY be sealed to another wife AFTER the first wife's death. They cannot be sealed to another woman while currently married to a living wife. FACT. Hopefully Pinetree gets this right next time. Another FACT: The practice of polygamy in the early days of the Latter-day Saint church (let's net get confused with RLDS or FLDS - they are not the same) came as divine revelation from the Lord. There were many good reasons behind it, obviously, as the Lord is all-knowing and wise. The practice was stopped in 1890, so I don't understand why there is so much fuss over it still. It is not permitted in the Latter-day Saint church and if anyone is caught to be practicing it they will be excommunicated. Anyone who claims to be a Mormon and practices polygamy is NOT a member of the LDS church. Another FACT: The practice of polygamy was first noted in biblical times. Let's see.... Abraham and Moses for starters had multiple wives. And do you know why? It was through divine authority, therefore, the Lord authorized it, just as in Joseph Smith's and Brigham Young's time. So those who do the ridiculing of the early saints in the church and polygamy and also believe in the Bible are simply hypocrites. Good question, Jaxon. I don't think people will ever let it go, as most people who hate Mormons will use anything and everything to try to destroy the true gospel and turn people away from it. They are Satan's tools and they don't even know it. How sad.

The reason many people believe that Mormons practice polygamy is because the media constantly associates polygamy with the Mormon faith. Most people are unaware of what the rules are for being a Mormon.

Whether Mormons practise polygamy now is pretty much irrelevant to what true Mormon teachings are, and what the early Mormons believed and practiced. If Mormons no longer practice polygamy, why not? Is it because of further "divine revelation" or because of giving in to State Laws?

That's funny - the fundamentalists who still practice polygamy would say that YOU'RE not a real morman for not doing so. Just a difference of opinion, I guess, but your church WAS formed on the idea.
But that's ok - there's plenty of other things strange about mormans without the polygamy thing. The mysterious disapearing golden plates, the underwear thing, the caffine mystery - you may want to rethink your belief system. But then, I say that to everyone.

those who still practice polygamy have roots in the LDS church. The LDS church is the church of Mormons. The polygamists are a small minority. It is my understanding that polygamy was dropped only because Utah wanted to be part of the US.

the mormon religion just blows me away with some of the things they can believe and do, and yes they did practice polygomy at a time. not anymore which is very true. and people that want top try and prove the BOM wrong need to knwo that. the mormons that still practice it may not think that the BOM needed to change, and the teaching didnt need to change. the rules change so much in the mormon religion that people may just want to stick with the times of old? like the blacks, mormons accept blacks now, because their god changed their mind about blacks, but back in the day they did not. i am sure there are still some mormons that do not accept blacks. same principle

WE haven't practice Polygamy for over a hundred years, WE quit practicing polygamy due to the fact if we didn't the government would have throwin our leaders in prison and seized all church property, the Lord is wiser then all the world. For those who think that the Mainstream Church still pracitices it is full of it. President Gorden B. Hinckley has one wife. That's all.
Has for why people still dogg on us is because they are blind, ignorent or just plain evil.
