I am going to guess that you aren't seeing the same officers in the Dunkin Donuts all night. Providence has a pretty good sized force.
According to a report from the Department of Justice, a grant from the DOJ would have freed up 147 officers from administrative duty. I seriously doubt that 147 officers make up the bulk of the force. Let's say that they are 1/3 of the active patrolling force. Most departments have three shifts so there would be 147 officers on patrol at any one time. In an area of about 20 sq. miles, that is 7 officers per square mile.
I am sure there are not a ton of places open 24 hours so officers may come from a 2 or 3 square mile area to get their donuts and coffee so they can stay awake and have the carbs to chase down the bad guys. You would have somewhere between 14 and 21 DIFFERENT officers visiting that location on any given night.
Looks to me like there would be many officers visiting at different times and if one wasn't to look too close, they may think it is the same officers all the time. :)

If you are watching them all night at the Dunkin Donuts then you are either a crackhead yourself or just a loser who still lives with his mother. The true answer is that they don't sit there all night, but sometimes they like to get a cup of coffee, in between dealing with your problematic crackheads. The next time someone is breaking into your house I think you should ask the cops why it took them so long to get off there arses from the DD and come to your house, see what happens then.

They usually only work an eight hour shift so you are seeing different police come and go. Besides someone has to make it safe for customers to pick up the donuts that fuel Americas industries!!
Give the cops a break, they work at a dangerous job for less pay than many city employees who sit in safe, climate controlled offices.
I wouldn't be a cop for the wages they get.

They are sitting there because their superiors aren't doing their jobs by monitoring the cops activities. This in turn is a waste of your taxpayer money. Complain to the police department about what you are seeing, and also complain to the mayor (put it in writing and "cc" the mayor's office). You might also want to contact your local newspaper and have them check it out. That would be an interesting front page story that might "shame" the police into actually doing their jobs, instead of stuffing their "gobs" with donuts. One interesting headline might read: Cops "dunkin" the crackheads for some good "joe" at Dunkin Donuts. Good Luck!

HEY! What's wrong with you? Didn't you know that serve and protect oath included maple bars? Seriously though, good question. I work at a salon right next to a Starbucks. There are ALWAYS at least 4 cars there. They even park in the no parking zone for an hour at a time. If you ask, they tell you they're doing their meetings there. Boy, that's alot of meetings...

I've got a great idea! Next time you are at Dunkin Donuts counting the minutes the police officers are there, go ask them this question, yourself.

Believe it or not, night shift is slow. As my criminal justice instructor said, "Night shift is 7 hrs, 57 minutes of boredom, with 3 minutes of excitement. And the 3 minutes usually comes at the very end of your shift." And cops have to eat, too. They're people. I've even seen them in Wal-Mart buying tampons for their wives.

Dunkin Donuts gives police free doughnuts. Thus, the reason "cops are always at Dunkin Donuts".

Take your pick:
1. They are safe at Dunkin Donuts and there are plenty of tasty donuts and hot coffee.
2. They are making sure that the store is safe.
3. They don't want to get out there where it is dangerous.
