I do lots of small to mid sized drops, wheelies, jumps, stairs and other kinds of free style rideing. I some times do trails but most of the time i stick to the roads and i wonder what kind of a bike would be suited for me if I want to spent from 5-8 hundred dollars on a bike? and it would be better if the bike have at more than 100mm of travel but just 100mm is fine too.
it would be great if some one can help me out with this.

The 250/500 would be a great starter bike as mentioned above. However, I don't have any riding experience and just bought my first beek 6 days ago. Just got delivered the other day!! Anyways, I bought the GSXR-600. I loved the style of it. They come in 3 sizes. 600/750/1000. The 750/1000 would be a big mistake for a first bike. The 600 has alot of power as well. If you want a nice bike check that one out. It's powerful yet is a semi-decent beginner bike. Although, if you are concerned about power then the 500 would be the way to go.

i would suggest a freeride/all mountian style bike. they're not super light (around 30lbs) but they will have a good amount of suspension good for doing drops (up to 7 feet or so, depending on what you get) most of these will have forks with 130-170mm, which gives you room to grow as you progress into larger jumps/drops. expect to pay around $1000. go for a Trek Session of Specialized FSR if you have the bank for it. trek fuels are fairly inexpensive too.

another suggestion would to get a hardtail with about a 100mm fork. for gearing - get a single speed on the front, 9 speed on the rear. these "stunt" bikes can be extremely light (around 15-20lbs) because they dont have much equipment on them. you'll be able to do drops up to 4 feet or so. hardtails make for great jumping to. they are easier to trick out with - wheelies, endos and all kinds of other stunts. these are cheaper - you should be able to find one in your range of $500-800. there arent alot of manufacturers for these types of bikes though, so if you have trouble finding one, go to your local bike shop and tell him what you want and he'll be able to piece together a good bike for you.

I have a gary fischer and I love it.
It was like $600. It has the springs and good shimano.
Find a nice light frame and when you talk to the salesperson let him/her know what you're looking for.
You can ask for a "poor man's racing bike".
You want something with a good derailler. So...bottom line, don't worry about the frame so much, when you're riding off road, you want your shifter to work, and to work good and to work ALL the time. So like the cheapest-top-of-the-line.
You can invest in some slicks if you're going to do an extended amount of road riding.

Keep the rubber side down!

You need a strong frame with a strong fork. I don't know much about prices, but check Specialized P. series, Cannondale Chase..

Banshee has a Scratch, but thats for around 1,000. Maybe a good option, I don't know if you can stretch your budget.

Another more expensive, is the Santa Cruz Chameleon, but again, more money, for around 1,700 or more.
