My 10 month old lab can't control herself when company comes over. She gets really excited and just doesn't behave. She's a doll when people she is very familiar with is around, but when it comes to anyone else, shes a manic. How do I get her to be a pleasure instead of a pest?

There are a couple of things you can try. First, I would suggest a squirt bottle. This probably won't work if your dog likes water. My Vizsla LOVES water, so he actually enjoys squirt bottles. You can try having her on a leash with a normal buckle collar when people come over. If that doesn't work try putting her in a training collar. There are varying "degrees" of training collars. Work your way up. With the collars, when she is misbehaving give her a quick "pop" as you say "[Dog's Name] NO!" By give her a quick pop I mean QUICKLY pull up on the collar and immediately release the tension. You just want to apply an instant of pressure with the collar. Remember to do this when you tell her no. This is called a correction. If that doesn't work, you can move up to a shock collar, but please use that as a last resort as she is still a pup. It's just going to take practice and patience.

Also, have you had her in obedience classes before? Obedience classes are an absolute must for any dog. Personally, I don't recommend PetSmart. Check with your breeder, vet, or local humane society for recommendations. A trainer will also be able to give you solutions that are more tailored to your specific dog.

Good luck!

What I really would say is to get into a training class somewhere. I am a firm believer in all dogs having a training class. It would keep a lot of dogs from going to shelters. Also, what I would do is practice teaching her to sit. When she jumps up on you, ignore her. As soon as she sits, give her a lot of attention. Have everybody who comes over do this with her. I would even take her out where there are a lot of other people, like a pet store. Ask people to help you out and tell them you're teaching her to calm down around new people. Give the person a treat and have them tell her to sit. When she does, she'll get a treat and get petted. The more you can do this, the better. Most likely, she'll start getting the idea that she gets good attention when she's sitting and calm. She's a Lab and Lab's usually take 2-3 years to mature. Labs are really good dogs, so hang in there, be patient. You'll be glad you did. ; )

Being an owner of a Chocolate Lab I know what your going through. If you want your dog to behave you have to give her proper grounds, you need to be firm with her and make sure she knows who's boss. She should know not to act crazy around new people if you discipline her for it enough. REMEMBER a dog has a tiny brain... so you shouldn't feel too guilty about punishing your dog because most likely they'll forget.

Wouldn't suggest spraying her with water,as this gives pets a complex,as the breeder I purchased one of my Yorkies from a few years ago did this to her dogs and it makes them very afraid of spray bottles and water.Would suggest you speak to her in a rough tone of voice and say a big "NO"when she dis obeys and maybe put her a an area where she knows she isn't being good ,kennel cab, etc. She will finally understand that she isn't pleasing you,as her owner.

With my dog, I got a tie-down. It's like a short leash that hooks to the wall and keeps the dog well.... down. There short enough that the dog can't jump on your guests, but long enough to lie down and move in a compleate circle. To keep them occupied, give them a stuffed kong with there favotite treat like penut butter. You may also want to put a soft bed or his/her favorite blanket. I hope thsi helped!

Bring her down with a tranquilizer dart. Enough to stun a bull moose in heat.

No, seriously try a spray bottle of water. Every time she acts up, spretz her with enough mist that she'll get the message.

I would put her in a different room when you have company that she doesn't know.
