For a long time I thought he was a Shepard/Chow mix but now I do not think this to be true. I know that his markings are definately shepard. But I cant figure out the second breed...mostly because of his ears. They are floppy not like a shepard or a chow whos ears stick up. So I have now been thinking that he is a shepard/retriver mix... What do you think???

To me he looks like an Australian Shepperd/chow mix - I definitely believe he has chow and the Sheppard doesn't look so much like German as much as Australian -and the Australian would give you the ears that aren't necessarily stiff and the nose that resembles a lab

"Breed type" is, basically, another way of saying "what this breed of dog is supposed to look like". Once you've spent time around a breed (or breeds) and gotten a sense of breed type, it becomes very easy to tell when a dog is not purebred -- they will lack some features of their own breed type, and have those of another (or others, depending on how they are mixed). A Rott/Terrier mix could never look like a Doberman, for example (even if it was black/rust), because the body types of both the Rottie and most terriers differ greatly from that of a Dobe. The head may be blocky, like a Rott, or bluntly muzzled, like a terrier, but it would not have the elegant sweep of a Doberman.

He looks like a German Shephard/Chow Chow mix. I had a dog that was that mix. My dog had the same face, looks about the same height, and the exact same tail. There also looks like there could be a bit of lab in him. The head shape looks to be more blocky like a lab rather than the german shephard which is longer.

He is mostly Golden Retriever with a bit of Lab. He doesn't look anything like a Chow. My daughter had a Golden for years and that face is a Golden.

To me he looks like a Golden Retriever mix. Head and color I can see on the head and front of him looks Golden Retriever. Maybe crossed with chow or Shepherd. Dark on back looks Shepherd "saddle". Whatever he is, he is very pretty.

Ok, to dispell a myth - not only chows have black tongues! German Shepherds do too. (I have to German line German Shepherds) It is in the breed standard!

I think German Shepherd/chow/retriever. His head is blocky like a chow, but he has a retriever look to him. IMO he is too blocky for just a retriever, though.

He looks like a shepard-lab mix. Labs are floppy eared.

I don't know.I can definitely see the chow and the shepherd, but I wouldn't rule out beagle or Golden retriever or both.He is really beautiful, though, and bless you for rescuing him.

I think he's got some Labrador in him. Maybe even some Golden Retriever. The German Shepherd in him is obvious.
