You can use one or the other depending on how complex your return is. 1040EZ is the simplest, 1040A in the middle, 1040 the longest. Anyone is allowed to use the 1040, even if their return qualifies to use 1040EZ or 1040A. If your income or adjustments fall into one of a number of categories, or if you itemize, you have to use 1040. 1040EZ is used by people with very simple returns - it's only one side of one page, and has no other forms that can be attached to it.

Actually, Xani is wrong, if you are self-employed you file a schedule C which can only be filed on a 1040 not a 1040A.
There is alot to do with income source but another big difference is with dependents.
1040EZ is if you have no dependents
1040A or 1040 is if you have dependents

You can always use Form 1040. The A form and the EZ form are just versions of the 1040 that have left off lines that most people leave blank on a regular 1040.

the amount of deductions and income catagories...ez is one page, a 1040 is 2 plus a ton of schedules attached... go to the irs.gov website and type in the forms on the search, they'll come up so you can see them all and compare them.
