I would confess if I had stolen the cookie. But, if I had not stolen the cookie, I would not confess. I think mothers like the one you described in your question actually causes lying. See, I had VERY strict parents. And no matter what the disobedience was, the punishment same. (like if you accidently forgot to take an empty coffee cup into the kitchen, etc.) My siblings and I were whipped no matter how benign our "crime" might be. So, I reasoned it this way: If I get caught with that cookie, Mom will torture me. And if I lie
about it, she will torture me. So when there is only punishment to be gained by telling the truth, being the little girl I was inclined to lie. Because it might save me from a beating. Peace.

Considering parents abuse their children every day all around the globe, I'm sure you'd admit it long before it got to that point even if you *didn't* do it.

Just the nature of torture itself... to end the pain, people will tell you whatever you want to hear. That's why torture isn't a reliable method of getting down to the truth.

I don't know. If she's the kind of mom who uses waterboard torture to make you confess, God knows what she'll do to you once you tell her of your heinous crime.

When I was a child, my hand was stuck in the flame of a gas stove, but I didn't confess. I wasn't guilty, and would not confess to something I didn't do. But then Ive always been a stubborn SOB, even as a kid. Hope this helps!
