you can use picasa2 from google: http://picasa.google.com/ is free. In picasa you can do "GiftCD" create a CD with you picture at what resolution you need (including original size)

You have to cut the display size with an image editor. Say the photos are 1024x768, then you put them each into an editor and reduce the display size to something smaller, like 640x480and save it. That will throw out a lot of data, but the picture will look ok, at the new size. Blow it back up to the size of the original and it will look terrible, because data has been discarded.

Resolution: how many pixels per square inch of photo.

Display size: what are the dimensions of the photo.

File size: how many bytes does it take to display the photo at the display size it was taken, and with the pixel count used.

Make sure you save the downsized file as a copy, otherwise you will lose your original printable file. Small files make lousy prints!
