Well, I don't what problems these people are having but these methods have worked for 43 years and I weigh 98 lbs and can convince a Great Dane that jumping up is not a good decision..

IGNORE THE DOG....uh huh, and he is supposed to figure out you are ignoring him because he jumped and not because you are talking to your mother-in-law on the phone.

So-and-so told me it doesn't work and I haven't really done anything but have a dog or two and no real experience in training but .....uh huh, every TRIED it sugar??? How many AKC obedience titles has this "trainer" (and I'm guessing Petsmart) earned? maybe Schutzhund??? Correcting the dog for the behavior is "rewarding it?" Right so when that "trainer's" 16 year old son gets caught with pot she will 'ignore'the behavior so he doesn't get rewarded with attention???? Saints preserve us from fools!

WHERE DO THEY GET THESE THEORIES?????

Stop jumping by any of these methods:

(1) A loud “No” and push her off and hold her down and scold her with “Bad, Bad Bad”. Then tell her “Okay,” let her up and give her a pat (if she doesn’t leap again.)

(2) A loud “No” and time it so that as she comes off the ground, you bring your foot forward and step on her back foot.(Balance same as above)

(3) A loud “No” and as she comes up off the ground, raise your knee so that she hits it with her chest and bounces off. (Same as in 1 after that.)

You have to follow through with the shoving the dog flat on the lfoor and scolding or they think you are playing!!!

Our obedience trainer says the knee in the chest is not a good idea and it does not always work. I know it doesn't from personal experience as I used this method when my American Eskimo was young and it didn't work.

What our trainer tells us to do is to immediately turn your back on the dog when they jump. When the dog finally calms down and back on all fours, then turn around and pet and praise. The dog jumps to get your attention, and if you give it when he does this, you are reinforcing that behavior. When the dog realizes you are ignoring him by turning your back to him when he jumps he'll eventually get the message that jumping up does not get him the attention he wants.

You MUST be consistent with addressing the jumping up issue. The hard part is getting family and friends to follow thru with how you address it. All to often, my parents come over and the puppy jumps up and we tell them to turn back on the puppy and we hear "oh, she's just excited, it's okay, she'll calm down in a minute!" Well that's okay if they don't mind, but what happens when someone comes to the home that does!

If you are going to do any kind of obedience training, DO NOT teach the word "down" for them not to jump as that is the command for "lay down". Off is a better word. If you use down for jumping and then attempt to teach the dog with the same word, you will confuse your dog.

Good Luck!

Hi
Rear your knee up to block the dog, then grab the back of the collar with one hand push the dog's bottom down to a sitting position with a firm "No" and direct eye contact.
You also do this if your dog tries to jump on others
The key is consistency.. So many people start out doing the right thing but they give up too quickly.
Good luck!

If it's a mid sized dog or larger, as it jumps up stick your knee out a bit and let the dog run into your knee. Reinforce with a loud no and a stern hand signal. After a few times of a bruised sternum, it will stop.

I don't know if you subscribe to "Fosters and Smith" or not, but you should. They have any and everything for dogs and cats.

For your problem, I would recommend a harness that you put on the dog, and the dog cannot jump. It doesn't hurt the dog, like a choke chain collar would, and I've talked to people about his harness, and they tell me it's very effective..Wishing you luck!!!!!

When your dog jumps on you tell him to get down or to sit. When your in the process of doing it, give your dog a treat. Then when he gets ready to jump, tell him to sit or down, he will expect a treat for it. It is simple if you take the time to train the dog.

I LEARNED THIS FROM PETSMARTS PUPPY CLASSES, WHEN YOUR DOG JUMPS ON YOU, TURN YOUR ENTIRE BODY AWAY FROM THEY DOG WHILE TELLING HIM NO DONT JUMP, SIT. BY PUSHING YOUR DOG OFF OF YOU, YOUR ACTUALLY REWARDING HIM B/C HE IS GETTING THE ATTENTION HE CRAVED BY YOU TOUCHING HIM. AFTER A FEW TIMES THE DOG SHOULD KNOW THAT TO GET ATTENTION FROM YOU HE SHOULD APPROACH YOU AND SIT. WORKS GREAT FOR MY DOG. EVEN THOUGH SOMETIMES ( LIKE WHEN I COME HOME FROM WORK) SHE JUMPS ON MY WITH HER PAWS ON MY CHEST BUT THATS A GAME THAT WE PLAY AND SHE KNOWS NOT TO DO THAT TO ANYONE ELSE.

when he starts to jump, pull out your knee so it can jump on that, or when he starts to jump on you, push him down. If he is a big dog

Fold your arms and turn your back on him...make no eye contact and tell him "sit". Only turn around and praise the dog when he is calm and sitting. If he starts to jump up again, fold your arms and turn your back on him.

Here is what I did and it works:

When the dog jumps up on ME or someone else, I will whack him on the rear with my hand if I have nothing else and scold him by saying NO several times in a somewhat loud voice and get him down and again, point my finger in his face and again say NO several times.. after a few times, he did stop
