Someone can easily ask a question to which they know the answer. Usually, the reason to do that is to point something out or teach something. Obviously, Adam and Eve had sinned. God asked, "Adam where are you?" Where was Adam? He was hiding from God. Adam's sin had destroyed his fellowship with the Lord. God knew this and He was pointing it out to Adam. It is a question we need to ask of ourselves? Where am I? Am I in fellowship with God or in rebellion against Him?

God wanted to see if Adam would lie to him.
He was giving Adam the benefit of the doubt..

Of course not. God wanted Adam to recognize his own condition just as we all should.

Hey Aaaron.....ask yourself this. Why in the word would God ask such silly questions even in an interrigation? Especially, when Adam and Eve know he is God and knows and sees everything?
God : "Where were you hiding, what have you done?"
Eve : "Your God you know and see everything DUH!"
Adam : "Eve told me do it"
I think your preacher needs to come up with a better line than that lame one.

I don't think that God ask that question for His own benefit-I think it was for Adam.

God was testing Adam, to see if Adam would lie about his location, as God knew Adam was going to lie about eating the fruit.
--Edit--
Compare it to this example: A child is behaving badly at school. He gets sent to the principal's office, and the principal calls the child's mother or father at home. When the child gets home, his parent(s) ask him, "Well, how was school today?" The child says that "Well, it was ok." The parent(s) respond: "Then why did your principal call home?" It's a test of honesty, just as in the Garden.

No it's a test of adam's honesty and how he will respond to God now that he has done wrong and KNOWS he has done wrong.

God was interrogating Adam when he said "Adam, where are you?" and."What have you done?". He wasn't actually questioning his wherabouts, he was interrogating Adam about why he was hiding, and what he had done.

G-d was being polite. Adam hid because of his new awareness, his shame.
