That kind of depends on what you want your dog to act like. LOL. My son's Pembroke Welsh Corgi is, in my opinion, the best tempered dog. He rarely barks and jumps on people. He tends to avoid strangers completely.
Not a guard dog, for sure. Somewhat shy, but very fun and playful when he knows you, and loves to play chase and run outside. But his standoffish ways tend to aggravate people who WANT their dogs to smother them with tons of attention. If you want an attention-seeker, this wouldn't be your favorite breed.

The best dog I ever had was a beagle mix I got from an animal shelter. I have heard others say a mixed dog (mutt) is usually the best tempered. Little pure bred dogs are usually kind of high strung (the miniature pinscher I have now fits that description). So I would say go to a shelter and interact with several dogs and see which "fits" you the best. Plus it's a great feeling knowing you've given a deserving dog a second chance at having a good life.

I would say all of the retrievers(with the exception of the Chesapeake Bay-they can be a bit aloof),most of the other sporting breeds, beagles,Newfoundlands,Great Pyrenees, foxhounds, basset hounds, collies, mastiffs, great Danes. There are so many and of course everyone thinks that their favorite breed is best,so it's probably best to do some research to get some idea, but I'm betting that Labs and Goldens will be at the top of the list.

You going to get a ton of personal opinions, so here's what I think... a dog that has been properly trained by the owner is going to probably have the best temperment.

Depends on what kind of temperment you consider the best. Golden retrievers are good with kids, love to play in the water, and are very active. Dashchunds are somewhat active, not so well with kids, and like to dig. Pugs and Bulldogs are quirky and peppy. They act a bit ditsy somtimes, but it all depends on the personality not neccisarilty the breed.

Chihuahuas often get a bad rep, but people say my pups/dogs have the best temperament of any dogs they have known. I socialize my dogs well and they come prespoiled and loved.

In my experience cockapoos or springapoos are very smart and make excellent family dogs. Both of ours were potty trained in less than a week, know tons of tricks, and are great with kids and adults of any age.

Temperament diffinetly has to do with heredity
go to the breeders list and they will give you the standard
for each breed...this includes temperament
each dog is different, so the best bet of getting one with a
good temperament..is heredity.
good luck

Border Collie...they do require ALOT of exercise, but as long as they get it and they are trained, they will be the best dog ever. They never tire out, they will do ANYTHING they can to please their owner, and they are remarkably smart, making it very easy to train a Border Collie. Usually one to three times to a command and our's has it down pat. All may not be the same, but we love our Border Collie!
