Unless you are a VIP or have an invitation, you will not be entertained at the embassy.
If you happen to be a VIP, you can usually have your aides contact the embassy and request a meeting. They may throw you a reception depending on your importance. Examples would be:
1. CEO of a fortuen 500 company in country XXX to close a major deal.
2. Member of congress
3. High ranking administration official (cabinet member, critical sub cabinet member etc.).
If you're a regular guy, your only business at the embassy will be for:
1. Consular affairs (lost passport, help with bail money, etc.).
2. Invitation to an all American event which typically takes place in countries with small American populations.

It usually depends on where the embassy is and how busy is it. If its a small African country, go on in, they will be more than happy to see you but if its a major European (Geneva, Paris etc) or any other large embassy, the appointment will be for your benefit i.e not having to wait in line for hours and if you have a pre-arranged time, you should get more attention from the person helping you.

Exactly as the Poet said. Embassies do official business with the foreign government and take care of some specific needs of local American citizens or Americans with emergencies. Visits are by invitation only.
