There are many. The best advice I can give youis to work form teh outside in. What I mean is that each course will have it's own utensils. All the forks and spoons are on one side of the center plate and all the knives on the other. The best thing to do is with each course use teh utensil that is farthest away from teh plate but still appropriate. Obviously you don't want to try to eat soup with a fork...if youthink of the plates as a two level snowman, the head or the top plate nearest your glasses is a bread plate. As the courses come and go the servers will put the food on the correct plates. If you have soup remember to lift the edge of the bowl nearest your body to fill the spoon when you near the end of the bowl. There are several reasons for this but the important one is that it will minimize any chance of you spilling the soup on yourself.

Generally the better cook books will have a section on this.
Most of the time you use the cutlery furthest from the plate first, when in doubt....always wait and see what the host or hostess does first. People will think you know if you just keep your mouth shut and follow the host.
When setting a table for guests DO NOT put out silver and glasses which don't have a specific use for the meal that is being served just "because it looks cool"; the table might be pretty but you look the fool for doing that.

appetizers, such as salad, then dinner, then desserts (the forks) bowls and plates the same... also there are usually different glasses, or goblets for water, wine and an after dinner drink...

I have worked in 4 and 5 star restaurants and there are specific uses for some items so you have to be more specific.

Not so fast bub. First he is to be seized by the town watch and taken before your local elders. Then after he is fairly tried and condemned, only then can he be stoned. I recommend bricks, saw them used at my last stoning.
