if you have the license in your name and even better, if you can find where the dog is now, you can go to the police and have her arrested. if you just have the license, you can file a report, but the cops probally wont do a lot of detective work to find a dog. good luck though, and its way better that you have the license in your name

umm yeah, I think so, because technacly your gf's mother stole the dog because it was without your permission or your knowledge. You say the dog had a tag. It is legal to steal a dog that doesn't have it's licence on or doesn't have one, but if your dog had a licence on at the time of the taking, then she is and offender of the law and the penalty of stealing a dog is the fine (whatever the judge or police choose) plus the value of the dog (what you paid for it) for example, if the dog was a purebred, then your gf's mother would probably have to pay more, if you got it at the shelter, then you might just have to find a way to get the dog back yourself, or negotiate with your gf's mom.

I would say definitely illegal. She stole your dog and gave it away. Let me ask you this. Who paid for the dog, cleaned up after the dog, paid for the dog food. If all you did was get the dog and leave it at the gf mother's house and left it all up to her to take care of, that might make a difference as to whether it would be considered a crime.

Although many people consider their pets almost like children, the law considers them property. If you or your girlfriend have papers stating that you or her are sole owners, than it would be almost the same as if someone else had given away, say, your car. However, if you don't have such papers, than you're only recourse is to settle it between the two of you and her mother.
Good luck.

How old is the girlfriend? If she is still living at home, her mother's the boss. Perhaps mom was tired of taking care of the dog/cleaning up after it/dealing with taking care of it. Dogs are a huge responsibility -- at least they are if you are taking good care of them.

It is not illegal if your girlfriend is a minor. Other than that, there is too much missing information to give a proper answer.

Under YOUR circumstances, it would not be classified as illegal.. it would be classified as unfortunate. I know if it happened to me, I would hate the mother forever
