I dunno, because on one hand, you hava group who refuse to believe in science or the oodles of evidence that shows that there may not be a god, and on the other hand, you have people who refuse to believe there is something more than what we see.

I'm an Agnostic btw =)

Ok....release the hounds!

I've noticed that my Athiest friends were willing to discuss all religions, whereas my Christian friends get pissed at anything they find contradictory to their faith and refuse to listen.

But then again, that could just be my crazy friends.

There seem to be more closed-minded people among the Christians than there are the atheists. Some closed-minded atheists see God as something that is subject to natural laws, and thereby, earthly logic. They do not take into account that a "supreme being" should have characteristics that are inexplicable by man, for man is not advanced enough to understand--otherwise, all of humankind would be true gods!

Christians, however, use NO logic. Their "logic" is a book that has been tampered heavily by man, so much to the point that the original meaning of the book has been lost in time. That is why when their closed-mindedness is revealed, it is so much WORSE than a closed-minded atheist.

I'm only an atheist with respect to the Bible. I'm agnostic to the greater question of whether there is a supreme creator.

I haven't yet read Richard Dawkin's The God Delusion, but I heard that in it he says on a scale of 1 to 7, where 1 is a pure God believer, and 7 is a pure atheist, even he is only a 6. I'm probably a 6 as well, but possibly a 5.

I'm not bothered when people have faith in specific answers to the big open philosophical questions. But there are details in the Bible that are clearly wrong. People who prefer to believe the Bible instead of Science are letting their faith blind them.

When you say atheists "refuse to believe there is something more than what we see," I assume you mean that there is some metaphysical/spiritual element to the universe. And there very well could be. Most atheists I know can say this. However, one would expect this metaphysical/spiritual element to leave behind some sort of quantifiable evidence. If it doesn't, then how can we say with any certainty that it does exist? Of course, if said element does leave behind evidence of it's existence, that means it doesn't exist in the metaphysical/spiritual realm, rather it exists in the physical realm. The idea of "something more than what we see" is a paradoxical statement.

Moreover, it is without definition. What is this "something?" Is it god? If so, which one? There have been thousands upon thousands of gods throughout history. What sort of rules govern this metaphysical/spiritual realm? If it can be anything, then it is effectively nothing.

It's not that I refuse to believe it. I just don't see any reason to.

I would definitely say Christians. As you say, Christians refuse to believe in the vast quantity of evidence against their religion, which is clearly very closed-minded. Many atheists read the bible and make an informed decision not to believe it. Think about it, you've said yourself that there is evidence against Christianity. Evolution, the Big Bang and so on. So to form a belief against Christianity does not require the same rejection of evidence as is required to form a belief in favour of Christianity.
Having said that, there are open-minded Christians and closed-minded atheists. This is only a generalisation.

What evidence is there to show no God?
Science is itself a belief. Structured.

For an Atheist not to give credit to the written Bible is contradictory itself.
Science is documented trials, experiments and conclusions based on physical evidence.
The Bible is a document that is physical evidence but is not recalled as scientific by some science advocates.
I said some. There are a lot out there that keep a very open mind.I hope I am one of them.
An argument will always have opposing sides. If they agreed there would be no need for the argument.
Science has only come of age drastically in the last century.
The Bible has been around for 2000 years and studied by billions.
Closed minded?

I am a Christian, and I have never seen myself as a close-minded person.Science is a great tool used to benefit mankind in all aspects of life. But,the same science you speak of that says there may not be a God,is the same science that says God has to exist. Why are so many people close-minded to the science that refutes one science? Isn't science all about finding the truth? So,why close your minds to ALL the facts, and instead just choose what you want to believe over what COULD be true?
In other words,I believe in God,but for those who don't,why close your minds to the possibility? Science hasn't conclusively proven either way.As a believer in God,I know in my heart of hearts that He exists, but for those who don't believe, you can't say either way that He does or doesn't exist. To totally deny it is beong close-minded.Science is what so many people are believing in now,but even science cannot prove God isn't real.

I'm an open-minded atheist, as I believe many atheists are. Many of us were at one time willing to consider the possibility of a god - we condsidered the evidence, and rejected it (since there wasn't any). Come up with something new, and many of us will consider it before making a decision - but keep in mind, you've had 2000 years to come up with something, and you haven't. Don't expect us to devote much time to considering your point of view if it's one we've heard a thousand times before.

Don't keep your mind so open that people throw trash in it. :)

What philosophy class? And how would you define closed-minded? Closed minded to the possibility of a god-figure?

You might notice that closed-minded Christians are just as closed-minded as closed-minded atheists.

Atheists don't refuse to believe there is something more than we can see. Atheists refuse to act as if such thing existed, unless there is further evidence. That's VERY different. I mean, give us proof, and I'll be the first one to convert. But don't expect me to go to church, anyway. I'm not about to go hear a pair tell me what I'm supposed to do with my life.

This is not a tricky question....Christians and Atheists are people and people are individuals with different thoughts, beliefs and ideas. Much like in a family.

So you can't possible ask a question like this and get a true answer.
