The 9mm will take about anyone. It is very effective here in Afghanistan and was effective in Iraq too. I prefer the M4 and M24 more. Being able to reach out and touch someone before they can fire back is the safest way to go.

An air pellet to the temple can kill somebody. I think the reason some like and some hate the 9mm is the powder load. To reduce kick, people reduce the gun powder load in the cartridge to reduce the kick. I heard that one MP shot a guy in the head several years back will a 9mm and the bullet was still sticking out of his skull (and the guy was still walking around). Obviously the load was too light. On the other hand, a 9 mm with proper powder can bring down an elk with one shot at several hundred yards.

The previous 3 answers come from people who have never been shot. One round from a 9mm firearm of any kind is enough to put you down and make you stay down, at best wondering what just happened. Anyone saying any different has no experience with personal damage of that nature. Two rounds means your chances of survival are very low.
Exception: I've known of guys who take rounds and keep moving, but those guys usually die.

The .40 cal Round is far more effective than the .9mm Round. 9 mm Rounds are used for the cost factor as opposed to the .40 caliber Beretta round BUT the .40 caliber Beretta is the Hand Gun of choice these days...magnificent pistol superbly simple and superb accuracy!

I think a 9 will take someone out. It may not have the initial knockdown power of something like a .44 or .45, but it will do the job.

It's rare..but it is possible to miss any vital organs or viens.
