Actually a grilled cheese sandwich is grilled in a frying pan on the stove instead of toasted in a toaster.

Butter a piece of bread
Put it in the frying pan
Lay on a nice piece of cheese
Put a piece of bread on top
Butter the top side of the last piece of bread
and grill away
The amount of time it takes to grill depends upon how brown you like your sandwich
You'll know it's done when the cheese kinda oozes out when you flatten it with the spatula that you've been using to flip it
For extra added flavor you can even put in a slice of lunchmeat.

Enjoy!

I'm American, so I say 'grilled cheese.' Some Australian friends I missioned with called it 'toasted cheese.' I think there was a slight difference, but I never knew just what the difference was. They couldn't explain it, either.

To make a grilled cheese sandwich, butter (margarine works fine, too, as long as it's the kind it's ok to use for cooking) one side each of two slices of bread. Place a few nice slices of cheese between them, leaving the buttered sides out. (Processed cheese works great for this, as long as it's real cheese -- not the imitation stuff we can get here if we're not careful.) Place the sandwich in a pan and put the pan over medium heat. It'll start to sizzle a bit. When it's sizzled for a minute or so, carefully turn it over to sizzle the other side. Turn several times to evenly brown both sides without burning.

Dunking these in fresh, hot tomato soup is wonderful. Personally, I don't really care for tomato soup very much, but I do enjoy it with a good grilled cheese sandwich or two to dip in it. Cut the sandwich in half diagonally, then dip one of the points daintily into your soup while you hang onto the other end. Eat the dipped part. Since you're not sharing your soup with anyone, double-dipping is just fine.

They are pretty much the same. The grilled version is made with more butter. And yes, Dipping in tomato soup is yummi! Campbell's Tomato in a can does the trick! You don't have to dip it in pieces, but can just dip a little bit of your sandwich at a time.

You obviously have enough recipes here. I prefer white bread with 1 Kraft American Single. You can also ad more ingredients if you go the grilled route. I personally like ham and fresh sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper. But then I add another slice of cheese.

Ok, I've gotta go make one now!

You are so close, grilled is just what it means, in a pan with butter and grilled on both sides, Toasted can be done in the same manner without the butter till the cheese melts, my twist? Open faced under the broiler with a slice of tomato till bubbly, close the sandwich , back under the broiler and toast both sides. Dang that's good, with Tomatoe soup, bring on those cold nites, I'm ready

Same thing. Grilled Cheese sandwich is true American comfort food.

Grilled Cheese sandwich: put a pat of butter in a frying pan and turn the heat on high.

Put slices of cheese between two slices of bread and butter the outside of both sides of the bread. Put the whole sandwich into the fry pan. Fry a couple of minutes on one side and turn. When the sandwich is browned on the outside it is ready to eat.

It's good to use cheeses that will melt easily like: Kraft slices, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, Velveeta.

You can also put a slice of ham or turkey or whatever in the sandwich.

Dipping in tomato soup - yes, it is good, especially if the tomato soup is homemade.

O.K.
I moved to America last year, from England....we have toasted cheese sarnies, (sandwiches) which are done under a grill, a broiler to americans.
OR you can use, if my memory serves me correctly, a Brevel, this is kind of like a waffle maker, but for sandwiches.
I used to love cooking bacon, (Danish bacon, not the bacon that I buy over here in America, which is like streaky) and putting it in a Brevel toasted sandwich maker with cheese and beans!

P.S If anyone here in the U.S knows where I can find Danish Bacon, I know a 13 yr old boy who would be very grateful!... My son misses it sooooo much.

Other than one being on a pan and one in a toaster, they are more or less the same. It's the way they are cooked.

And yes a grilled cheese with tomato soup is great.
