Duragesic patches are used quite often because they work. I apply them to my patients at my job and I've never seen anyone get sick from them.
Keep in mind that even though you are on a duragesic patch, and the dose you are taking is low, you may still need something in addition to the patch for breakthrough pain.
I've never seen a duragesic patch used by itself without another drug prescribed for pain to act as a 'buffer'.

I was on it for years and had no problems I started at 25ugh and that is what I would talk to your Dr. about you may feel sick if it is to strong, It is better to try the lower dose first I was able to use it for 3 years before I needed to increase it. I would still take it but with the new medicare plan d they wont pay for it, I now take pills 4-6 times a day. The fentanyl works for 72 hours and keeps you at the same level for that time not all the ups and downs like pills

It may make you sick. Fentanyl is a very strong opiate. Opiates cause constipation, respiratory depression, itching, nausea and urinary retention. That doesn't mean you WILL get these things, it means you MIGHT get them.
I suggest you see a chronic pain specialist. (Call the anesthesia department of your local hospital and ask for a referral) Long term use of opiates leads to tolerance, which means the drugs just don't work as well for you. You can also get opiate-induced hypersensitivity, which means you'll feel pain more.
There are non-narcotic drugs such as gabapentin and amitriptyline that may work better for you. There also may be injections that could be of benefit for you.
Good luck.

I'm very sorry for your pain and all the things you've had to endure. I hope somehow you can find relief.
I go to a pain clinic, with anesthesoliogists who specialize in the treatment of pain. I do not have your problem, but there are a lot of people who come in to the clinic who do have back problems.
Is your doctor a pain specialist? It might be wise to be referred to a pain clinic BEFORE you take such a drastic step as a PATCH.
A reputable pain clinic will monitor your pain, and they should be very understanding. Also, you should know that (for the most part), doctors who are not pain specialists are unwilling to continue prescribing pain medication for any extended period of time.
So, all in all I would really urge you to go to a pain clinic - they really will be able to help get you on the right meds.
Hope you feel better, dear - will send positive thoughts your way. :)

I agree with the other physician. Pain management is a tricky subject at times, before you start applying as strong a drug as Fentanyl you should look into other options. I personally only prescribe narcotics as a last resort to those with a low risk of dependency.

The doctor ordering this is he or she a pain management doctor? If not, I suggest seeing a pain management doctor. I know Lortab is also an anti inflammatory and short term relief for pain.
