I weigh 175 pounds and am 5'6", 20 years old. If I stick to an 800 calorie diet will I lose weight, or will it actually be slower than say 1200 calories. (I know if I don't stick to 800 calories it will make me gain, but let's assume I can)

YES! 800 calories with send your body into a starvation mode and regardless of how much weight you lose, you WILL gain it back. The minimum caloric intake is considered to be around 1200 for an adult. Don't do this to yourself. The best bet is a reasonable diet with exercise. However, another approach which has worked for me (was up to 210 after back surgery and lost 40 in the past year) was simply to avoid large dinners. I eat well at breakfast and lunch and have a bowl of cereal or comparable dinner.

i think technically you could be consider anorexic if you only eat 800 calories a day.
You could eat 2200 calories a day and still lose weight, but you have to exercise enough to lose more thann 2200 calories.
Sticking to a healthy diet and doing cardio you'll be on the way to losing weight.
An unhealthy diet might get you to lose the weight as well, but once you go back to eating more calories than 800 a day you'll just gain it all back.

my friend went on a very strict diet, and she did slim down. However, she starts to experience hair fall, and is often tired.it shows in the face, and she starts to look like a ghost!!!

instead of cutting down the calories, why don't you focus on burning the calories... stick to a 1200 calories diet ( which i think is already very low), do workout to help burn the calories and build muscle.. think if you have more lean muscle, it will actually burn more calories then you are now.. so you will remains slim longer...
by cutting down the calories intake will means that you might not be able to absorb all the necessary nutrients for beuatiful skin and hair. The low energy diet might also results in a more lerthagic body..and you will often look tired.
so even if you look slim, you might not look great...

an 800 calorie diet could be potentially dangerous to your health, I would stick to a 1200 calorie diet, its still low but more healthy than 800.

this is VERY dangerous. Don't do it! Doctors and nutritionists recommend you never go below a 1,200 calorie diet. It can have potentially very harmful effects, not to mention that 1) you won't be able to maintain your weight loss or your diet because it's simply too little food. you might see results but if you're not learning to eat properly (more fruits & veggies, lots of water, lean protein, whole wheats) then you'll eventually gain some or all of it back... and maybe yo-yo for life. 2) eating TOO LITTLE will put your body into "starvation mode" which will slow down your metabolism and could actually damage it to work slowly for YEARS. You see, because of evolution, when we were a hunter/gatherer society people wouldn't eat for days and our bodies learned to store the fat so that on those days when we didnt have anything to eat, we could still survive. So, if you eat too little your body will think "uh oh, we're starving. better store all the food we get into fat in case this starvation lasts long"... trust me, you don't want to do that to yourself. The effects can last for years... I highly recommend a well-balanced diet.. .and don't forget exercise!

For your age and height 800 calories are too less for proper nutrition. Also eating too less sometimes slows the matabolism which means no weight loss.So u must have atleast a 1200 to 1400 cal diet.

u better stick to a 1200 calories diet as 800 calories type is unsuitable for u.

Yes, it's way too low. You body will go inot starvation mode and won't let you drop any weight. Stick with 1200 and start moving more. Don't forget to count the calories you are drinking as well. People tend to forget about these.

Hi,

I personally find it very inconvenient to keep counting calories. While it is true tat calorie counting can help you lose weight, it can also help you lower your metabolic rate and that is bad because it will make you put on more easily in future unless you take up exercise..

I know of a better way to lose weight. I specialize in helping people lose weight easily and safely via a detox diet.

I myself have lost 15kg within two months on this diet. You can read more here:
