The distance between Egypt and Jerusalum. From a quick glance at the map, I would estimate 400 to 500km. They say he wandered around for 40 years so perhaps even further.

There is no way of telling. The story was most likely exaggerated. Apparently, the crossed from The sea of reeds(red sea), from egypt to jerusalem. but they got lost in the desert for 40 years.
it's probably just allegory

As far as I remember it took 40 days to get to the promised land.
I don't know how far that actually is though.
They were 40 years in the wilderness for complaining.
