I live in South Florida and my dog is well... ready. We really want him to be a father but it seems that there are no breeders near us. All of them live in the far NorthWest part of Florida. What should I do?

Breeders are willing to travel great distances to use a dog they really want (I once drove from Ottawa, Ontario to Chicago, Illinois to use a particular stud dog). They won't cross the street to use one they don't feel is worthy.

If you want breeders to be interested in your dog, you need to start showing him to prove his worth. The other breeders will see him, and if they like him they will come to you, regardless of distance. You also need to have him cleared for common health problems in the breed.

Breeders can use any male to breed and only the very best dogs are offered for stud. Unless your dog is a top show dog it is very unlikely any breeder is going to want to use him.

Do you realize that when your dog is used you will probably have an increase in male behaviors like marking, humping and increased aggression.

Your best bet is to contact his breeder. This is, assuming by 'ready', you mean your boy has earned at least one title and has had all the needed health clearances (not your local vet saying he's healthy, I'm talking about the things mentioned in the post above, hips, patellas, eyes, etc., certified by a national organization).

Your boy's breeder, if responsible, will know the lines, might very well have a candidate for a mate for him based on your own dog's pedigree, title and clearances.

If you simply mean he's horny when you say he's 'ready', and you have no intentions of attaining titles or health clearances, it would ease his 'suffering' to be neutered.

You could put an ad in the paper. Most people read the paper and you never know who might have a Chinese Crested. Another option is to post him online. Some dog or pet classifieds websites have a section for stud dogs.

By saying your dog is really ready, I hope you mean he is a proven good specimen of his breed with a championship title, and that you have had all potential genetic problems known to his breed screened & have the certifications to prove it (CERF eye clearances, OFA hips & knees checked, etc). If not, please do not breed - he is definately not 'ready'.

A good breeder will get these certificates for their dog & require it of any dog they breed into their lines, also.
