It sounds like the Atheists are against Christians and their ideas of god, creation, etc. So,what are you for?And if you are for that, then shouldn't you be named in relation to that cause?I know a scientist is for science.Tell me what you are in favor of,and why don''t you call yourself that?

I think this is actually a good question. It's not nice to "thumbs down" for it.

Atheist is a confusing word because it's a name for something that isn't. In fact, atheist is a lot like the word "nothing" - it is a word to represent an absence rather than a presence. However, there really isn't a better word for it.

Because so many people define their entire lives by their belief in God/Gods it's an important thing to note that someone does not with a term such as atheist. However, other than the not-believing-in-God part, atheists don't necessarily have anything in common.

I'm glad there is difference in how we believe. I also am not anti-Christian; I see the role Christianity (when actually followed according to its rules) plays in making many individuals happier and better behaved. I'm not against your ideas; I just don't think they are based on reality. However, our views are bound to differ on the nature of reality because we are unique individuals.

well, just like a lot of different believers are for a lot of different things, I think it's foolish to speak for all atheists. I'll speak for me.

I'm for intelligent tolerance. Before you talk about someone else's faith, I think you should study it until you know it at least as well as they do, if not moreso. I think this should apply to believers when they speak about other faiths also. In short, don't open your mouth to speak until you know what the H#LL you're talking about, and THEN be courteous.

Usually someone who is AGAINST something has had a bad experience with it. This is why they call it "Defensive behavior." So when someone flames Christianity and calls themself an Atheist, chances are they've been badly burned. So if you ARE a Christian, pray for them, and don't flame back. Even I know that, and I'm an atheist.

I see no difference between an Atheist practicing intolerance against Christians, and say a Muslim practicing intolerance against "infidels." If we're going to survive another century we need to do better than this.

First of all, let me point out to you that there are many Christian scientists. Now, I am an atheist, and I am not against Christians, or any other religion of the world. I just do not believe in the existence of any sort of God, nor do I believe that our world was created by any sort of omnipotent power. I believe we are the resulting product of eons of universal evolution. Now as for what I am in favor of.....I am in favor of ice cream, I am an icecreamiam.

I'm in favor of the real world, but I suspect that calling myself a realist wouldn't have much impact in this category, as the term is too broad.

Where people define themselves by what they believe, they most often include belief in a god or gods as part of their belief system -- that's why those who profess to follow Christ are called Christians, those who follow Jehovah are called Jews, those who follow Islam are called Muslims, and so on.

The word atheist literally means "without god," therefore that's the correct term for one who holds no belief in any god.

And that's all it means. Any individual atheist may be indifferent or hostile to religion and/or religious believers; but there's no requirement for atheists to be "against" anything.

Atheists are for curing your ailments. My Doc is one, and a damn good one at that.

Atheists are for putting really bad people away for a long, long time. The DA in the county I grew up in was an Atheist.

Atheists are for making love to and spending the rest of your life with. My wife is an atheist.

All of that, and I am a religious, strong in my faith and observant.

And...not one of those Atheists has ever....I mean EVER behaved like some of the bigots on here claiming to be Atheists. Makes me wonder if they really are or if they are so obsessed with their own belief in G-d that they post bigot crap and claim to be Atheists...to put Atheists in a bad light.

A (without) + theism (belief in god) = Without belief in god. Atheists believe that no god exists. As for what they're "for?" Atheists as a group have no specific cause that they support. Their ideals have nothing to do with their atheism, that's only their religion.

PS: Scientist doesn't mean that they're "for" science. It's an occupation.

Atheists are a diverse group. The thing we have in common is a lack of belief in god, so we are described by a term that mirrors this similarity.

You can call us not-believing-in-godists, if that's more to your liking, since we're for not believing in god.

a means no/opposite of and theist means religion.
atheists are named for what they're in favor of, which is not having a religion.
p.s. they're not just against christianity because, i don't know if anybody has told you there are OTHER RELIGIONS (gasp), i know it's shocking. they are actually allowing people to freely practice religion without persecution. i mean, it's even in the constitution. what will they think of next...letting women vote?...HA!
