After all, the definition of insanity is "doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results." Why hold onto religion when it has let us down so badly and so often? (Examples: religious wars and crusades; clerical abuse; fraud; illegal meddling in the political process; psychological abuse; support for slavery, misogyny, racism, etc etc etc)

@ thee wojc: You keep saying "yes, you're right, but." Are you listening to yourself? -- "Never insane to have faith"? Look up the Children's Crusade, then come back and explain how faith is not insanity. Look at the faces of the 19- and 20-year-olds you meet every day and picture them bleeding out into the Middle Eastern desert, then tell me that the president's faith -- which led us into this ruinous war -- was not misplaced.

but but ... you list social woes while most religious folks clutch onto religion as a personal life raft. whatever heinous actions are made in the name of their religion matters not. it's the personal comfort they get from believing they're safe from their deity's wrath and the feeling of being special and a part of something bigger than themselves that cements their dependence on their religion. besides, the woes of the world created by religion are always blamed on an Evil One and evil doers.

the bible has been misinterpreted many times. and people believe what they think the bible really says. and yes people around the world are going to try to start conflicts and the situation may get so bad that they have started a war. it's not God's fault for what man does. it is in these times of struggle that we must hold onto our faith. it may seem a worthless effort, but God will never let us down, he will never give us anything that we can't handle. the examples you've named are wrong to do and yes a way of explaining insanity is what you explained. but having faith can never be insane. you'll find in another of your questions i stated that people are going to run into situations where they disagree with someone elses faith. and i stand by what i said, just becuz you don't agree with something, that doesn't give you the right to harrass someone. and now with what i said about its never insane to have faith. some people say that having a faith is a false sence of security. just a way to make life easier. and people will defend their faith and say, 'if this ain't true i don't know what is'. basically what i mean by, 'its never insane to have faith'. you've gotta have something to believe in. or what else is their.

That's an interesting point.
However, water has been used many times to drown people. We don't discard water because of that.
Faith has made positive changes in the lives of individuals and whole societies.
While some people tried to use their religious faith to justify slavery, it was actually religious faith that did away with slavery. That's just an example.
It is not logical to do away with something just because some people without conscience have misused it.

Hi, well to start off the Bible says without faith it is impossible to please God(Heb 11:6). All the things you described are abuses caused by following mens traditions and not the Bible. The holy Writ is all we need to know God, understand what HE wants from us, how to obtain salvation, and how to live the christian life. Paul said in (2 Tim 3:16-17) all we need is God's Word and nothing more(paraphrased). Faith is very important because without faith we have no hope of the things unseen(Heb 11:1). So faith is very important and is indispensable when it comes to wanting to please God.

Hope this helps & God Bless,

Chris

I assume you have enough faith when spending paper money backed by the government saying its covered by gold, right? Yet both the government and money have caused all the things you listed in your post and more, but neither is disguarded. Used rightly it serves a great purpose until man tampers with it.

LOL.....You could also ask....Why hold onto humanity when it has let us down so often.

Truthfully, my faith has never let me down. ;o) If people don't want to have faith or believe in God or anything, that's there choice, but if people want to or do believe, that's also a choice. Force of opinion really seems to go both ways on this forum.

But not everyone is insane. If you discard faith, then there would be no reason to live. If God revealed himself right now, faith would not be needed by anyone, and therefore there would be no reason to live, because everyone would go to Heaven, except for those who are very ignorant in athesistic beliefs (I am not trying to insult, either).

Everything you've just outlined is a fault of man, not faith. Everyone you know will eventually let you down, except God. Believe it.
