All the other answers ( even the couple of sensible ones ) have got it wrong ! If it was the flyback then there would not be normal sound either , the obvious place to look is on the CRT neck board for dry soldered joints , in particular the CRT heater connections , can you see the glow in the glass neck ? you should be able to .. Any way the chances of your pic tube being to blame is nil . !!! Cheers Pete.!!

People with no knowledge of tv repair always blame the tube when the picture goes and the switch if it goes dead.Thirty years in the TV trade and my ears are still ringing !.Bring it to one of the few remaining tv repair shops and pay him manly and it wont cost as much as employing a doctor or a solicitor or a builder for that matter or as others have said go out and buy a new one as it must be one of the few items on the universe that is cheaper now than when you bought the last one in the 90s.

I doubt it's a picture tube problem, most of the time when the pic tube goes bad the colors are messed or it might start flashing on and off but it doesn't go completely dark. This is probably something in the high voltage section of the set like a transformer. It could also just be bad connections in the chassis. I just finished repairing a RCA tv with the same problem and charged the customer $95. It takes time to re-solder all of the bad connections.

As with most of the old TVs out there it sounds like the tube has gone you can replace it. But to be honest It will more likely be best if you just go out and get a new t.v as you're t.v is quite dated. Also new t.v's such as LCD and high definition t.v's have both better frame rates and just simply better pictures all around. But if you still would like to get you're old t.v repaired there are a whole lot of t.v repair companies within Newcastle though I cant acutely even guess the cost without looking at the t.v itself you could ring around the many companies out there for a quote:

Everyone is saying that the tube is gone, but they don't know, it is much more likely that the flyback transformer that supplies the tube with it's high voltage burned out, this is usually the case. You could take it in, a TV guy could tell you if it's bad or not. $75 fix,, about 37 pounds I'd guess.

Sounds like a blown picture tube, your best bet is to replace the TV as a new picture tube will cost as much as a new tv.

It sounds like the tube is gone. They can be expensive depending on the TV. Bring it to a repair shop and I'm thinking it'd be about £100 to get fixed, but that's a guess coz it's years since ours went bust.

ditto the above answer, everybody assumes the picture tube.. well when you ASSUME you make an ***- out of U&ME. anyways, it could be anything. a bad capacitor in the vertical section, as the above mentioned a bad flyback, could be the signal cable has come loose from the driver board on the crt neck. any number of things come to mind. could be as little as no parts to about $150 USD. i charge 40 to 100 USD for labor,(depending on how complicated and how big the tv is. good luck

the battery which you have now has reached the tip of it is re-chargeable existence cycle and desires to be re-placed with a clean battery, it somewhat is widespread for re-chargeable battery's. there is not any desire for a technician merely by using fact the battery has stopped working, merely eliminate the battery from the computing device and re-place it with a clean battery of an identical make/variety.
