This dog belongs to a couple about 2 blocks away. I don't know this couple, but from my understanding the man works for the sheriffs department. I have had this dog run out at me numerous times when I have gone for a walk. My brother and his wife have said it has done the same to them. My sister-n-law has called the sheriffs department and reported this dog before. (We live in a small town with no police department of our own). They told her that it is not their job to enforce town ordinances and they can't deal with this dog. My son came home from church tonight and told me that this dog tried to attack him. My brothers wife called and told me that my brother, her and another neighbor all witnessed it. My son admitted that this is not the first time the dog has done that. The neighbor who witnessed it, confronted the owner and she said she didn't give a fuc*! I want something done about this vicious dog. What do I do if the sheriffs dept. won't step in?

The closest animal control is in the next town, and they are controlled by the sheriffs department.

No this dog is not fenced in. It is allowed to just roam around where it wants. I say "almost" attacked because that persons neighbor who witnessed it yelled at the dog right as it got about 3 feet from my son, and the dog turned away. She said if she hadn't yelled the dog was about to lunge at my son.

Who is in charge of enforcing town ordinances? Do you have a town office of some kind? Call them and ask them who is in charge of this and stress your fear someone will be hurt.

What is the penalty if the dog does bite someone? Is it put down? Does the owner have to surrender it?

If your town has a law about loose dogs, they probably have a way to enforce it. Someone at the town hall will know.

Also call the local (even if it is far away, find the closest one) humane society, SPCA and ask to speak to someone about this. They might have a humane officer who can talk to the owners.

Ask what you can legally do to protect yourself if the dog leaves its property so you won't get sued/arrested later and take those steps. If you can carry an airhorn and some pepper spray or something like that, carry it when you pass the house just in case.

I would say talk to the owners, but it sounds like they won't be very helpful. Do you have friends in common who might be able to speak with them? Maybe let them know that if the dog bites someone it could be put down or???

Personallly this type of things makes me nuts and I would be arming myself and taking my son to church but that would be bad and I know that. So, my best advice is to find out what you can do legally and stay within those boundaries.

Bad people with nasty dogs often know how to twist the law in their favor.

I sorry your son was harmed by these dogs. Sue the neighbors. They should be in control of their dogs. Did animal control come out if not they should have. I can tell you if they been pit bulls they would all have been put down. As a owner of 2 large dogs mine are in control all the time they are out. I own pits if I can control mine these neighbors of yours should lose the right to own dogs because they can not take care of them. for those who said that there was something wrong about a wiener dog attracting and hurting a person, last year a Pomeranian killed a 6 week old baby in the 5 mins its mother was in the bathroom. All dogs under the right circumstances can be dangerous

That is a tough one since the man works for the sheriff's. They are all gonna take up for each other. Is there another way to walk where you will not be passing by the house wuth the bad dog? The dog will probably kill someone before anything is done.

This may sound cruel but if the neighbor is as you described her and the police won't do anything about it and animal control is controlled by the sherrif and his crew here is what I would do....
Very nicely tell the lady " if her dog attempted to attack me or my son again, I will shoot it" If it happens again, do it !!!!
There are some places that won't do anything to you for that either. Call SPCA or town hall in your area and see if they can help. If not, do the above. I would do it and not think twice about it. My kid is more important to me than her aggressive dog.
Good luck.

First of all - document everything. Keep notes of the phone calls you've made to police and their response (or lack thereof). Also, if you can get pictures/video of the dog being offleash. If your town won't do anything try the county. They should have an animal control officer or the humane society. Also, have the witnesses write a statement and get them notarized. You have to build your case.

Call animal control and tell them whats going on. Try and have your son walk a different way until the problem is resolved. What about calling the State Police and see if they can help you. Good Luck KG

Do you have an animal control officer? Maybe code violations? My only question is, how does a dog *almost* attack somebody? Is it not fenced in? I don't know, maybe the dog needs to magically find a new home.

If the dog even bites you or anyone you know you can have it put to sleep.

Get someone you know with a really vishous dog to pass buy and when that dog jumps out let the other dog rip it to shreds...and definately file formal complaints...like all of you neighbors ,so if that dog does ever bite anyone you wont have any trouble from animal control and sue the **** out of these loser a**holes. Dont any of you leave the sherrifs dept without a complaint in your hands written up.

I really dont like to hurt any animal, since its not the dogs fault...but nor am i going to take a bite from any dog...id kill it on the spot and throw it through that owners window.

Call the police and file a report before that dog really injures someone.
