I work with this girl, and me and her talk a lot, and she seems cool.
But the only thing is I don't know how to pronounce her name so i can never call her by name. It seems weird to now finally ask about the pronounciation.

Her name is spelt 'Janja'
any ideas... cause i have no clue?
Yan-ya maybe?

What nationality is she? That would help... In Spanish, J's are traditionally pronounced as H's and sometimes as Y's. Other languages I'm not so sure... but that info would be important in figuring this out... Hanya or Janya (the A's making an AH sound) would be my best guess...

I agree with the others who say you should ask her. I'm sure no one ever gets it right, so if you ask, tell her its a pretty name and you want to say it right, she will appreciate that better than if you messed it up or never say it, like everyone else must.

If you can't work up the courage, ask someone who also works with her how to pronounce it, or listen to what other people call her, if you have the opportunity. Or just guess and she'll correct you if you're wrong. Good luck, and don't worry about it so much. She won't think anything of it either way, I'm sure.

What a great ice breaker to tell her she has an unusual &pretty name and how does she pronounce it !
My name can be pronounced several different ways, but we say it the way my Mom always did, so her name might be something like that too.
She will laugh and say no one ever gets is right, and appreciate your interest. :)

It looks like a Slavic name, perhaps Serbo-Croat - if that's the case then Yanya should be just fine. Anyway, I agree that you shouldn't be embarassed about it, it will be something she's had to deal with with people a lot less sensitive than you!

You don't have to know how to pronounce it. You can just ask her.
