I live in Boston and I am thinking of moving to NYC. Is it worth it?
Here is what I am looking for:
-Fun Lifestyle
-Something that is either cheap to live in (around $1000 for a 1 bedroom)
-If not able to be in the trendiest part of town some place that can commute easily to Financial District & somewhere near NYU.
-Average Rent in NYC.
-Some place where I won't get shot walking to the local store.
-Brooklyn - part of NYC? too far to live?

If you moved from Boston to NYC and have some good advice (extra points.)

You will have a fun lifestyle as long as you are not working all the time to pay the rent.

You will absolutely not find anything anywhere near NYU for $1000. The average rent for a Manhattan apartment was over $3000 in 2005 and it's only gone up. It would be more realistic for you to look for a studio, deep in another borough and even then you will have a hard time finding something acceptable that is that cheap. There is an affordable housing crisis in NYC and things are bad for everyone. Luxury condos are sprouting up for sale everywhere but nothing affordable to rent.

You could always try renting a bedroom in a share situation. It's possible that you won't find much under $700/800 since you don't want to get shot or have an hour commute.

Currently, the super trendy neighborhood is still Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It's approx. 4-8 minute subway ride to 14th St. in Manhattan when the trains aren't packed and are running smoothly. Everyone still wants to move there for some reason. A friend of mine was happy to find an illegal UNFINISHED basement apartment there for $800, five years ago. It flooded with sewage. Williamsburg has been extended to include something they now call "East Williamsburg" which is actually Bushwick and it's not always considered a nice neighborhood. At this point it's practically a joke to assume that someone will ever live in Manhattan unless they have $$$$.

Occasionally people still find "deals". A nice one bedroom for $1200 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (just north of Williamsburg but the commute involves a transfer). Maybe even a 2 bedroom for $1500 in a disgusting building, on a bad block, in a shady neighborhood, again, in Brooklyn.

Back in April I read that NYC was the #1 most expensive city to rent in and that Boston was #2. I don't know how true that is. you should read up a bit about NYC rent stabilization laws before you look for a place here. If you get into a rent stabilized building, you don't have to worry about moving every year because your rent was jacked.

Good luck

You may be able to find that low rent in some neighborhoods, but its not all that likely, especially in the nicer parts of NYC.... check out newyork.craigslist.com to see some prices...

parts of brooklyn are great, others not so much, but yes that the easiest place to live if you're gonna commute to the financial district. Hoboken is pretty easy as well..

Yes.. But my first query could be -- Do you wish to hire/purchase? If purchasing, do you might have university age youngsters? Then you must seem at well colleges as good. If so, touch me. If renting, do you wish a studio/1br/a unmarried loved ones? There are plenty of questions.. If you want support, touch me. Good good fortune.
