I use the newest version of ProTools on a mac. If I want to burn audio files from my PC to edit in ProTools, what format should the files be burned in? mp3 or WAV??

Hi there...they'll need to be in mp3 format since files exported from Pro Tools in WAV format are not recognized by some applications.

Pro Tools generated wave files are in full compliance with the WAV file standard. However some applications which claim to support the wav standard don't actually fully support it. They may read simple wav files (containing only format information and PCM data) but may fail to handle broadcast wave compliant files which contain additional meta data in the header such as the region definitions used by Pro Tools.

In Protools you can't import/export an mp3 unless you've paid for the mp3 option. Regardless, MP3 is a lossy format, meaning you will lose quality from the original.

With Protools on a PC you have two choices: aiff or wav. On a Mac you have 3 - aiff, wav, or SDII (Sound Designer II, which isn't PC compatible). If the files are already wav then stay in wav because they won't change at all.

if your are going FROM your PC to the Mac, WAV is a perfectly fine choice. I highly discourage converting audio to MP3 until the very end of the editing process. MP3's are a compressed form of audio file that WILL result in loss of quality.

if going from Mac to PC the same holds true, the comments made by Seattle are true for the most part, but the audio itself is usually readable, just not any meta-data attached to the audio file. If you are having problems with this, make sure you have WAV files and not broadcast WAV files or BWAV because older windows operating systems sometimes cannot read these files.

i hope that answers your question.
