This is Buddhist philosophy to do with whether or not a person should involve him or herself in events over which they have no control - of course it was formulated at a time when there were no such things as global spy satelites so if a tree falls in a forest anywhere the "Bush" administration will have heard it Believe!

Definitely.
There's a difference between sound and noise.
Sound is created whether there are receptors or not; noise is a subjective choice made by a receptor.
Then a tree falls, it causes disturbances in the area, and part of the energy released is converted into sound, irrespective of whether humans are around or not.

Of cause, if there was anybody, he would hear.
Sound is the vibrations of air density, caused by mechanical or other reasons. When a tree falls, branches and leaves touch branches of other trees and produce noise and sound.

yes! exactly what futbar said...
i really don't know why this is a famous 'riddle'...nature does not depend on humans to exist... just because someone didn't hear something doesn't mean it didn't happen... if your phone rings while you're out, does that mean it never rang (or at least made no noise)? of course not.
to me, this shows the egocentricity of some people

No, simply because the definition of "sound" is the noise that is heard as the result of air vibrations from the source. Therefore, if there is no receiver for these vibrations to reach, then no sound is created.

Yes. It doesnt have to be heard by a person.
For example, a squirrel might hear the sound and react.
It would probably be upset too. (I nearly wrote "sh*t itself" but realised squirrels are more polite than that.)

of course it does. the world doesn't revolve aroud man, if we wern't here trees would still fall (there'd be a lot more of them as well) and they would still make a sound, we just wouldn't be here to hear it.
