This bird will definitely be ok with one leg. I work with a parrot rescue and have seen many birds with one or even no legs. Special accomodations are appropriate sometimes though. You may need to get a ramp or two for its cage. Many handicap birds dont need them, but some may. Just be patient with it and make sure you take it to the vet first and for most. If its a good vet, they will not suggest to put it to sleep. How do you think birds in the wild survive with one leg, they all will adapt. Good luck, and take care of the little guy.

Having one leg will not effect the bird being able to live, though it may not be able to breed. What you do have to worry about is the shock killing it or infection from the bite killing it. Take the bird to an avian vet...if you can not do this go to a pet shop and look for a braod spectrum anitbiotic designed for birds and follow the instructions for treating the bird.

There are many birds living with only one leg. There is no reason that your love bird would not make it with only one leg.
If your bird is alive a day or two after the bite then the only problem is making sure there is no infection. You should take your bird to the vet.
Take care,
Troy

That's a shame, first take the bird to the vet to make sure the wound heals properly.
I haven't had this experience myself but I know someone who has. The put "double" perches in the cage for their bird, it made it easier for them to "balance" themselves. As far as I know the bird is still doing fine.
Good luck to you both!

Poor Bird! I would take him to your vet ASAP! He might be able to survive with one foot, but if you don't take him to the vet, it could get infected. Cats carry a bacteria in their mouths called pasturella that is very harmful to birds and can cause septcemia - even if they just get into contact with it, let alone getting bitten, which can lead to death. Your bird probably needs an antibiotic injection ASAP.

Birds with one foot often become pirate birds. I hope he returns to make you walk the plank for being so careless with your friend!
