I keep hearing how the prophesies in the Bible are being fulfilled but I don't know of a single one myself. I'd appreciate an example, including the Biblical reference, a quotation if possible, and the event which you think represents the fulfilment of that prophesy. PROPHESIES FULFILLED WITHIN THE BIBLE DON'T COUNT IN TERMS OF WHAT I'M ASKING. I know there are many of these - that the Messiah would be born of a virgin (even though the Hebrew in Isiah doesn't tranlate to "virgin"...). A prophesy "fulfilled" in the same book the prophesy is in is no more reliable than a plot twist in a novel. Surely there is some example of a major event - the split between the Roman Church and Protestantism, for example, or the reformation of Israel, or World War II, or 9/11 - that can be identified as a scriptural prophesy. I'd be very grateful for all answers.

Israel's restoration in Ezekiel has it. The Jews were indeed scattered about the world and in 1948 they were given the Holy Land as their rightful home. No arguments about that.
As usual, though, these rely on imaginative readings and oversights. God never showed up to give Israel back to the Jews, it was the United Nations backed by Britain and America. If you say that God was working through the UN then presumably he was also working through Hitler. A prophesy of that kind worth its salt might have mentioned the Shoah - at least as significant an event as 1948. To overlook it entirely is callous to say the least.
If I was to predict that one day the United States will cease to exist but will instead be an amalgam of poorer nations, I wouldn't need to be god to know that, just a historian (which I am). 500 years, 10,000 years, it doesn't matter. It will go the same way as every previous civilization that overstretches itself. Which is every civilization ever. Some prophesy.

The restoration of Israel stands alone, though, among the usual vague, "There will be wars" (when haven't there been?), "People will disobey their parents" (ditto), "People will enjoy pleasure" (ditto, et cetera). Daniel's dream interpretation is a charming piece of imagination after the fact. Even all that stuff about armies - was there no place for the role of the world superpower in the prophesy? China may have the numbers, but nowadays (unlike 2500 yrs ago) numbers don't mean the strongest army. Where is the richest, most powerful nation in history in all this? Its discovery is not prophesied either. Perhaps it doesn't matter to God? The EU is a runner-up in anyone's book. Don't Americans feel left out?
And I am surprised at the laziness here too - look at these (exceptionally vague and creative) web pages, "I don't want to make it easy for you" from a faith that elsewhere proclaims its need to evangelize.
I asked for one. One is what I got. Thank you all for your answers.

Ezekiel writes under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that Israel will be returned to their land after being dispersed among the world.
This prophecy was fulfilled in May of 1948 with the establishment of the Nation of Israel.

even if you could make some resemblance to something that happend in the future to a writing in the past is of no concequence. take this for example.
In the City of God there will be a great thunder,
Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb",
The third big war will begin when the big city is burning"
- Nostradamus 1654
Let's interpret. Assuming "the City of God" is New York City, then the "two brothers torn apart by Chaos" must be the fallen towers of the Word Trade Center. The "fortress" is obviously the Pentagon, the "great leader" succumbing is the United States of America and "the third big war" can only mean World War III.
Spooky, right?
Wrong.
Let's apply a little intellectual honesty. What earthly (or unearthly) justification could there possibly be for characterizing New York City as "the City of God?" Why refer to the twin towers as "two brothers" when a far more apt word like "buildings" or "monuments" — or even, egad, "towers" — is at hand? Granted, "fortress" accurately describes the Pentagon, but by what stretch of the imagination could one assert that the United States "succumbed" to the 9/11 attacks?
Anyway, quibbling over words is futile, given that Nostradamus didn't even write the passage. He died in 1566, nearly a hundred years before the date of attribution. The quatrain in question is nowhere to be found in his entire published oeuvre. In a word, it's a hoax.
More precisely, its attribution to Nostradamus is a hoax. The passage was lifted intact from a Web page (since deleted from the hosting server due to overwhelming post-9/11 traffic) containing an essay written several years ago by college student Neil Marshall entitled "A Critical Analysis of Nostradamus." Marshall invented the quatrain to demonstrate — quite ironically, in light of its subsequent misuse — how a Nostradamus-like passage can be so cryptically composed as to lend itself to myriad interpretations.

The people of Israel would be scattered worldwide
Bible passage: Deuteronomy 28:64
Written: perhaps 1400 BC
Fulfilled: 721 BC, 586 BC, 70 AD, 135 AD, modern times
In Deuteronomy 28:64, the Bible said the Jews would be scattered worldwide. This prophecy has been fulfilled in detail. Take a look at the explanation of the Jewish "Diaspora," which means "scattering," from the Columbia Encyclopedia, Fifth Edition: "… by 70 A.D. Jewish communities existed in Babylonia, Syria, Egypt, Cyrene, Asia Minor, Greece, and Rome. Jews followed the Romans into Europe and from Persia and Babylonia spread as far east as China. In modern times, Jews have migrated to the Americas, South Africa, and Australia. The Jewish population of Central and Eastern Europe, until World War II the largest in the world, was decimated in the Holocaust. Despite the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, the vast majority of the Jewish people remains in the Diaspora, notably in North America, Russia, and Ukraine."
Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. …

To “the Ends of the Earth”
Matthew 24:14 And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.
A major challenge faced by those preaching the good news is the extent of the territory—“all the inhabited earth.” During the last century, many servants of Jehovah worked hard to reach new lands in order to spread the good news. What was the result? Breathtaking worldwide expansion. At the dawn of the 20th century, preaching was reported in only a few lands, but at present, Jehovah’s Witnesses are active in 235 lands! Truly, the Kingdom good news is being proclaimed even to “the ends of the earth.”—Isaiah 45:22.

Study the prophecy of Daniel 2. Nebuchadnezzar the king had a dream. He couldn't remember it and asked his wise men to remember the dream and interpret it for him. The wise could not so Daniel was called to interpret the dream. The dream was of a metal man. The head was of gold, the chest and arms were of silver, the belly and thighs were of brass and the legs were of iron. The feet were of iron mixed with clay. A stone came and smashed the image and became a huge mountain. Daniel gave the following interpretation giving credit to God.
These metal represented 4 kingdoms that would rule the earth.
Head of gold Babylon 605-539BC
Chest/arms of silver Medo-Persia 539-331BC
Belly/thighs of Brass Greece 331-168BC
Legs of Iron Rome 168BC-476AD
Feet of iron/clay Divide Europe 476AD-End
After the fall of pagan Rome, there was never to be another world kingdom. Many have tried to unite the world under one banner. All have failed. Charlemagne, Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler and others.
The feet of iron mixed with clay represent a divided world. Of note though is that the iron of Rome is still present. The Rock cut out without hands represents Jesus and His coming kingdom which will be forever and will fill the whole earth. It will destroy all earthly kingdoms.
So in one chapter, Daniel foretells 2600 years of human history, correctly predicting the rise of four world empires and the division of empires after the fall of the fourth. The fact that Rome is still visible in the feet of iron and clay shows that Rome, even though it is in a different form will be around until the second coming of Christ.
History proves that Daniel was correct. After Babylon came Medo-Persia. Medo-Persia was conquered by Alexander the Great and Greece. Greece fell to Rome. And Rome was divided into the 10 nations of Europe, 7 of which are still around today. Papal Rome took over from Pagan Rome as the history of the middle ages will show. And, although the Roman Catholic church tried to unite the world under her banner, Daniel prophesied against another world empire.

In the Book of Ezekiel, God declared to the Israelites, “I will gather you from the nations and bring you back from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you back the land of Israel again.” This prophecy was amazingly fulfilled as Israel, having been scattered in 585 BC, once again became a nation in 1948, and as it reclaimed all of its original land through the miraculous “Six Day War” in 1967 (during which it also retook Jerusalem as its capital). Remarkably, there has never been any nation that was abolished from the face of the earth and then later restored as was Israel!
Furthermore, the prophecies of Christ have proven to be flawless...In fact, a professor at Westmont College used 48 of the 456 prophecies in a mathematical experiment with his class and arrived at the extremely conservative estimate that the probability of 48 prophecies being fulfilled in one person is the incredible number 10^157. To put this in perspective, there are only 10 to the 80th power electrons in the whole universe, and any statistical odds greater than 10 to the 50th power are absolute impossible, per Dr. Emil Borel, the inventor of the Law of Probability. The professor concluded, “Any man who rejects Christ as the Son of God is rejecting a fact proved perhaps more absolutely than any other fact in the world.”
The best resource I could recommend is "100 prophecies fulfilled By Jesus" from Rose Publishing...

Here is a prophecy Jesus gave that was fulfilled 40 years after his death, burial and resurrection when the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem and scattered the remaining Jews, deporting them to other countries.
Luke 21:20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. 23 Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Tradition has it that none of the Christians living in Jerusalem were killed because they knew this prophecy and left town like Jesus told them to.

In 1948, Israel was recognized as a sovereign state, and this, has ramifications for the student of scripture. God promised Abram that his posterity would have Canaan as “an everlasting possession” (Genesis 17:8), and Ezekiel prophesied a physical and spiritual resuscitation of Israel (Ezekiel 37). Having Israel as a nation in its own land is important in light of end-time prophecy, because of Israel’s prominence in eschatology (Daniel 10:14; 11:41; Revelation 11:8).
The first poster listed a great refrence too.

Isaiah 66:8
Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.
May, 1948 the birth and recognition of Israel as a nation, brought forth by Harry Truman in ONE DAY. Arabs still do not recognize Israel as a nation but the rest of the world followed suit.

I looked at Natty's 100prophesies.org and it is an excellent site. You might want to also look at Jimmy DeYoung's Prophecy Today site. You can't get more current than that site. He was a journalist in Isreal for almost 15 years and he goes back often as you will see in his About Us section. He has books on the subject of which you are inquiring and the fulfilled prophecy is as current as yesterday, today and tommorrow.
