perhaps you did not realize it but living longer is very likely not something a priest would pray for. The big question is why is it the average age at death of a cardiologist is 58. Go figure???

Prayer does work. But, it won't make you live in this body any longer than God originally intended.
If your statistics are correct (that priests don't live as long as the rest of the humans), then I would guess that they die early from stress. What a job, listening day in and day out to peoples confessions of sin. Priests also give marriage counseling, and also just counseling in general.
Imagine if you had to spend all day, everyday trying to minister to others. Now imagine that the people you are trying to help start getting mad, insulting others, and even disrespecting you? I believe that would be more than I could handle. I'd have nervous breakdown if I had that much responsibility.
So, again, my guess according to the stats that you gave is that they die young because the stress had taken hold.
Peace.

Prayer does work and one does not absolutely have anything to do with the other. I'd be willing to say that when you look at the ratio of priest and the age the die compared to the rest of us humans and the age we die, I'd say there would be a big difference.

Well, I'm not religious at all but I assume most priests do not pray to live longer, as the goal of most Christian religions is to live for as long as God wants you to and then join him in Heaven.

Hebrews 9:27
And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,
Because prayer is not about us.
Prayer is conversation with God, not tapping the "Big Santa in the sky." God is LORD, not a benevolent grandpa. C.S. Lewis wrote (The majician's Nephew, I think) that Aslan is not a tame lion. God is not a tame God that you can pet with prayer. If He is, then your god is too safe.

Q: >>> If prayer works, why doesn't the average priest live longer than the rest of the humans ? <<<
i don't know about them, but i pray that i go quickly, that He comes soon. i know where i am going, and welcome death if it shall find me, to desire to live longer on this god forsaken planet, filled with evil, is not something i personally would desire to have, but thats just me.

Perhaps because the average priest extends his prayers to other people, and doesn't use them for himself......

The proper use of prayer is to pray for others not one's self .

Well said.
Why can't god take care of his own?
Answer; because god is imaginary and priests (and other con-men that speak for him) live no longer than anyone else.

The Road to HELL is paved with Good intentions. Prayer
can be just as bad as black magic. Imposing our will on others.
Make your requests to God, and leave it at that. If you don't get it, you or the one you asked it for, you probably don't need it.
God's strength is made manifest in our weaknesses.
