The 'thumbs up, thumbs' down on this site is obviously to register your approval or disapproval at someone elses comment.
Thumbs up -I agree
Thumbs down -I disagree.

The only time you are praised for 'thumbs up' is if your answer is chosen as the best. The amount of 'thumbs up' you have received will be added to the 10 points you receive for best answer (e.g. if you got 3 thumbs up and no thumbs down, you would receive 13 points)

As far as I can make out, there are no prizes on Yahoo! unless you answer one of the celebrity questions (e. g. Jay-Z, or Jay Kay)
It's supposedly all a bit of fun, and a bit like playing a game on PS2 or X-Box.
No 'genie' is going to pop out of your computer and give you a reward for your efforts.

add - what was the question you asked that got 55 thumbs up? I'm not being sarcastic, just that I don't have the time to go through all your answers and questions. I'm very impressed!
The best I've got so far is 10 ups and 10 downs. It was a question about George W(alker) Bush!

Thumb up or thumb down was the way a Roman ruler indicated weather a defeated fighter in the Arena should be killed or allowed to live. When a fighter was downed and still living, the one left standing would look to the ruler and wait for the signal to show him the ruler's wish. Thumb up meant the fallen fighter should be spared. Thumb down, finish the fallen fighte off. Today, thumbs down usually means that one is displeased with something or that an effort has failed or turned out badly. Thumbs up usually means that the person likes the outcome or was successful.

It is supposed to stem from Roman Gladitorial contests where it was a signal from the Emporer who couldn't be heard because of the crowd. Up meant life, down death! Now we use it for good/bad!

I dont know whether it's a myth as winners dont announce they've won but I'm sure someone will know!

And you just cost me 2 points because I was daft enough to answer
2 questions in one! SILLY ME!

The answer is in the question..........
And as to giving you a thumbs up, I have been led to believe that that sign in the roman arena meant kill the loser(s) - is that what you really want?

It is a generally accepted form of 'sign language' which we all seem to understand. So thumbs up to you. Wink, wink!
